CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A victory for
Ronald Cheserek in the 3000 meters and
Roshae Jackson's 3rd place finish highlighted Campbell performances over the weekend the 49er Classic at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center.
In a field that included athletes from more than 80 schools, Campbell competitors turned in nine top-10 performances led by podium appearances by Cheserek and Jackson.
Cheserek ran 8:23.9 to win the 3000 by almost two seconds over runner-up Zach Marchinko of Charlotte (8:25.62). Campbell teammate
Meshack Kipruto finished fourth (8:33.79) in the event that is not often held in collegiate outdoor events.
The school record holder in the 800 (2:09.99), Jackson ran her race Saturday in 2:11.97. She was the second-best collegiate finisher behind Helene Holm Gottlieb of Temple (2:09.93). Ericka Charles of (G.W. Express/Nike) was the event winner in 2:09.88.
Other Campbell highlights included a fifth-place finish for
Khai McLin in the 100 meters (10.61) and
Darius Prescott's seventh-place performance in the triple jump (14.27 meters).
Kelvin Kirui finished ninth in the 800 meters (1:54.61).
Michaela Louw was sixth in the women's 5000 meters (17:32.03), while the men's 4x400 meter relay team placed eighth (3:19.88).
Campbell continues its outdoor campaign next weekend (Mar. 23-24) at the Weems Baskin Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
