Camels fall at Elon 11-1

Campbell junior Zach Minnick cranked a solo shot to left field for CU’s only run of the night.

ELON, N.C. – The Phoenix put up four runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back as Campbell fell to Elon 11-1 Tuesday night at Latham Park.
 
First baseman Zach Minnick (1-for-3, R, RBI) accounted for Campbell's only run of the game with a solo home run in the top of the second. Matthew Barefoot (1-for-3, 2B) and Tyler Anshaw (1-for-3) rounded out the Camel hitters as CU was held to three on the night.
 
Phoenix righty Mason Daniels (1-1) earned the win as the Elon starter tossed 5.0 complete innings with six strikeouts, giving up two hits and one earned run.
 
Campbell's Matthew Barefoot (0-1) took the loss, surrendering four unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning.
 
Elon (21-16) got on the board first with a four spot in the bottom of the first. The Phoenix plated four unearned runs on two hits and one error, headlined by a two-RBI triple from Josh Broughton (1-for-4, 2 RBI).
 
Campbell (20-17) scored its only run of the night on a solo home run from Minnick in top of the second. The junior from Logan, W.Va. sent a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for his fifth dinger and 19th RBI of the year.
 
The Phoenix extended its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of second. With runners on the corners, leadoff man Zach Evers (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI) broke for second base but was caught stealing in a rundown. Left fielder Tyler Stanley (1-for-2, 2 R) came home on the rundown for Elon's fifth run of the game.

Elon added one run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to make it a 7-1 edge. Evers knocked an RBI single before Liam O'Regan (2-for-4, 2 R) scored on an error by the Camel defense.
 
The Phoenix erased any doubt with another big inning in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four on two hits to make it 11-1. Ryne Ogren (0-for-4, RBI) and Joe Satterfield (0-for-2, 2 RBI) posted sac flies to left field, then Matt Oldham (2-for-5, 3 RBI) drove in two on a double to right center.
 
Up next, the Camels are set to travel to Farmville, Va. for a three-game Big South set at Longwood. The series is scheduled for Friday through Sunday, April 20-22 at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium.
