CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Campbell redshirt senior linebacker
Jack Ryan was named Preseason All-Big South, while the Camels, entering their first season of Big South football, have been selected fifth in the conference's 2018 preseason poll.
Additionally, redshirt senior wide receiver
Aaron Blockmon and redshirt junior
Jaquan Brooks, as punt return specialist, took honorable mention nods on the league's preseason all-conference teams.
Kennesaw State was predicted to repeat as Big South Champions, followed by Monmouth. Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb were slotted third and fourth, respectively, while newcomer Campbell and Presbyterian rounded out the poll.
Kennesaw State swept the Big South's individual honors, with QB Chandler Burks taking Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while linebacker Bryson Armstrong was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
The league's preseason all-conference teams and poll were announced at the Big South 2018 Football Media Day in Charlotte, N.C.
Ryan is a three-time honorable mention All-PFL performer, posting a Campbell single-season record 103 total tackles in 2017, adding 8.0 stops for loss and 1.0 sack. Ryan enters his final season just 32 tackles shy of Milton Brown's (2008-11) Campbell career record.
Blockmon is also a three-time All-PFL honoree, collecting First Team accolades in 2016, Second Team in 2017 and honorable mention accolades in 2015. In his career, Blockmon owns 105 catches, 2,067 yards receiving and 20 touchdown grabs, all Campbell records.
Brooks, meanwhile, notched 289 punt return yards on 23 attempts (12.6 average) with a touchdown in 2017. Brooks is already Campbell's all-time leader in punt returns and punt return yards with 30 for 372. He was also the Camels' top pass catcher last season with 28 grabs, going for 305 yards receiving.
The Camels enter their second decade following their second winning campaign, matching school records for overall (6) and conference victories (5) in 2017.
Offensively, Campbell set school records for passing touchdowns (21) and passing yards per game (207.8) a year ago, while hitting the 50 touchdown mark for the second time in the program's 10 seasons. The Fighting Camel defense further established itself in 2017, ranking among the nation's leaders (10th) in takeaways (27), aided by a school record 19 interceptions.
The Camels return 44 letterwinners, including 18 starters (eight offense, seven defense, three special teams) from their 2017 squad.
Campbell kicks off its 2018 schedule on August 30, hosting Chowan at Barker-Lane Stadium. The Camels open Big South play October 20 at Monmouth.
