BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Dustin Werner of Campbell University has been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America at-large 3rd team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A rising senior from Reutlingen, Germany, Werner owns a 4.0 grade-point average as an economics and business administration major. He is a two-time Big South all-conference first-team performer in singles and doubles and was named the Big South men's tennis scholar-athlete of the year for 2018.
No less than 38 of the 45 members of the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America
® Division I Men's At-Large Team have at least a 3.90 GPA, with 27 student-athletes maintaining a 4.00 GPA (or better) as either undergraduate or graduate students.
A three-time member of the Big South Conference Presidential Honor Roll, Werner produced the third-best winning percentage in dual matches last year among league players (.789) with a 15-4 mark that included a perfect 10-0 record at the third singles position. He finished the 2017-18 campaign 22-8 overall in singles play for Campbell's Big South Conference champions, who advanced to the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional. Werner won 13-consecutive singles matches from Feb. 24 through Apr. 17.
"We are happy for Dustin, the team and our school," said Campbell head coach
David Johnson, who is entering his 21st year in charge of the program. "This award is well deserved. Having all A's for three years and the best overall record on the team for the past two seasons, while playing high in the line-up is a tremendous accomplishment. Dustin is very much a naturally gifted student and athlete. These pursuits seem to come easier for him, but that's not to say he does not apply himself, for he certainly does. He embodies the consummate student-athlete as he excels in both areas."
Werner was named to the Academic All-District 3 men's at-large team among Division I athletes from schools located in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia nominated by CoSIDA members in the following sports – fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Werner's selection marks the 25th time since 1988 that a Campbell student-athlete has been chosen Academic All-America® by CoSIDA. Campbell has had at least one student-athlete earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors each year since 2012.
