Last time out
Campbell forced three Georgetown turnovers and
Rocky Reid churned out 115 yards rushing, leading the Camels to a
13-8 win on the road Saturday in Washington, D.C. The win marked Campbell's first in its modern era (since 2008) over a Division I nonconference opponent. Campbell was previously 0-16 vs. Division I nonconference foes. The victory was the program's fourth nonconference road win overall.
In the program's 11th year, Campbell's 2-0 start is its third overall, all coming over the last four seasons (2015, 2016, 2018).
Reid's 115 yards came on 29 carries, the most rushes by a Camel since 2016 (Jared Joyner, 32 vs. Davidson). 89 of Reid's 115 yards came in the second half, adding two catches for eight yards, one of nine Camels to catch a pass on the day. The 100-yard rushing game marked Reid's first in a CU uniform and the first time a Camel surpassed the century mark this season.
CU defense back at it
The CU defense has picked up right where it left off in 2017, posting five takeaways through two games. The Camels picked off two Chowan passes in its 2018 opener, then forced and recovered three Georgetown fumbles in week two. Last season, the Camels ranked among the nation's leaders (10th) in takeaways (27), aided by a school record 19 interceptions.
Campbell's three forced fumble were the most since knocking out four fumbles at Davidson on October 18, 2014. CU's three fumble recoveries were the most since matching that total November 12, 2016 at Morehead State.
Trio of Camels named Big South Players of the Week
Following Campbell's road win at Georgetown, three Camels have earned Big South Player of the Week honors.
Damien Dozier was named defensive,
Colin Gary was tabbed special teams and
Caleb Snead tallied conference freshman of the week accolades.
Dozier helped keep Georgetown out of the end zone, posting four total tackles, 2.0 stops for loss, 1.0 sack in Campbell's 13-8 win at Georgetown, a strip sack on Georgetown's final possession of the day to secure the Campbell win.
Gary was also instrumental in the win, knocking down two field goals, including a career-long 37-yarder to give CU a critical seven point lead with 7:06 remaining in the game.
Snead, a redshirt freshman wide receiver, posted 98 yards on three catches, including a 70-yard TD reception to give Campbell a 10-6 lead with 6:16 on the clock in the third quarter.
Ryan on the verge of Campbell history
Redshirt senior middle linebacker
Jack Ryan is now 17 tackles shy of Milton Brown's (2008-11) Campbell career record of 269 stops. The three-time honorable mention All-PFL performer posted a Campbell single-season record 103 total tackles in 2017, adding 8.0 stops for loss and 1.0 sack. Ryan matched a team-high with eight tackles in the Camels' season opener vs. Chowan, and again paced CU in stops at Georgetown with seven. The Matthews, N.C. native was named preseason All-Big South heading into the 2018 season.
Blockmon looks to add another record
Aaron Blockmon is on the verge of adding another Campbell all-time record to his resume. The redshirt senior is currently tied with De'Shawn Jones (2013-16) for CU's all-time touchdown crown with 21 career scores. Blockmon is already Campbell's career leader with 111 catches, 2,152 yards receiving and 20 touchdown grabs, also ranking fifth all-time in all-purpose yards with 2,342. His 128 career points ranks third on CU's all-time list and leads all non-kickers.
Scouting Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers are off to a 1-1 start in 2018 following a 47-24 home win over UAB. CCU began the season with a 49-17 setback at South Carolina. Kilton Anderson paces the Chanticleers, throwing for 258 yards and two touchdowns, while adding a score and 80 yards rushing. Marcus Outlaw and Torrance Marable have combined for 308 yards and two TDs each. Silas Kelly owns a team-high 16 tackles with a sack.
Coastal is a member of the FBS level Sun Belt Conference, its second season at the highest classification of college football. The Chanticleers previously made their home in the FCS from 2003, when the program was launched, until 2016, and were a Big South member from 2003-15.
Wednesday's game will mark the first time a FBS program has visited a FCS in a true road game since Army traveled to Yale in 2014. Since 1978, when the divisional classifications were made, FBS schools have traveled to FCS (or I-A and I-AA) 255 times, but only twice since 2008.
Packing Barker-Lane
A greater-than capacity crowd of 5,624 turned out for the season opener and accounted for Campbell's 14th sellout since Barker-Lane Stadium was expanded to 5,500 seats in 2013. Campbell has averaged a sellout in each of the past two seasons, joining only Montana State and Mercer as one of three programs in FCS to accomplish the feat. Barker-Lane Stadium has set an overall attendance record in two straight, and five of the last six seasons.
Future football dates announced
Campbell has added
four future football dates, including North Carolina and East Carolina, plus a home and home series with The Citadel. Campbell will travel to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium for the first time on September 22, 2022 at East Carolina. North Carolina becomes Campbell's first Atlantic Coast Conference opponent on the schedule, with the Tar Heels welcoming the Camels to Chapel Hill on November 4, 2023. With the additions, Campbell will face at least one FBS opponent in each of the next five seasons, including Troy in 2019, Georgia Southern in 2020 and Liberty in 2021. The Camels also head to Coastal Carolina this season, taking on the Chanticleers on September 15. Campbell now has 16 future opponents on the books from 2019-23, including four nonconference dates slated for each of the next two seasons.
Next up
Campbell will host Shaw on September 22 at 6 p.m. at Barker-Lane Stadium. The contest will be the second of four consecutive nonconference home games for the Camels.
