COLUMBIA, S.C. / ELON, N.C. - Raphael Calzi closed the weekend with a 5-4 overall record as Campbell opened its fall schedule at the Gamecock Invitational and Elon Fall Invitational September 21-23.
At the Gamecock Invitational, Calzi sported a 2-2 singles mark in the double elimination style tournament in his first action as a Camel. Calzi advanced through the opening round with a 2-0 victory over Georgia Southern's Pascal Wagemaker before falling in the second round 2-0. The junior from Mondercange, Luxembourg then recorded a 2-0 victory over Davidson's Tommy Mason in the losers bracket before being eliminated in the following round.
Calzi paired with 2018 Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year,
Dustin Werner, to go 3-2 over the three-day event. The duo teamed up to defeat Georgia Southern pair Coulaud and Lazo for an 8-3 win to advance to the second round where they took down South Carolina's Caccitore and Pellitier, 8-6, before falling in the third round.
Dustin Werner also claimed a 4-4 overall mark on the weekend after picking up a 2-0 win in the opening round in Columbia.
At the Elon Fall Invitational,
Ondrej Labik and
Bastien Huon paired to post a 1-1 doubles record. The duo lost its opening round matchup to Richmond pair Evans and Lovitt before claiming an 8-4 win over Charlotte's Christoforou and Rice.
Campbell claimed the Big South Conference Title a season ago with a 4-3 win over Winthrop. The championship marked the program's first Big South Title since 1992 and marked the first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
Campbell continues its fall schedule October 5-7 at the Richmond Invitational.
