Radford holds off Campbell 56-52

BUIES CREEK, N.C. Shy Tuelle reached double-figures (12) for the sixth time in her freshman season, but Radford's Khiana Johnson poured on 19 to help lead the first-place Highlanders to a 56-52 victory over Campbell on Saturday afternoon inside Gore Arena.

Tuelle shot 4-for-9 from the floor, including 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, scoring a team-high 12 points. She also pulled down five boards. Lauren Carter and Hayley Barber scored eight points apiece; Carter totaled eight rebounds. Taya Bolden also finished with eight rebounds.

Playing a season-high 25 minutes, Lauren McNamara-Clement scored seven with four rebounds.

Campbell led over the entirety of the first half, earning its largest lead at the 9:33 mark of the second quarter, 20-11. Tuelle scored 10 first-half points, scoring five each in the first and second period.

The Camels held a 31-28 advantage at the half, but Radford outscored Campbell 16-7 in the third quarter, entering the fourth quarter with a six-point lead, 44-38.

In the final period, Campbell pulled to within two points of the Highlanders three times. Luana Serranho scored on a lay-up with 1:18 remaining, making the score 52-50; however, Radford's Kiana Johnson responded on its next possession and later made two free throws to go back up by six.

Serranho laid another one in with 18 seconds to go as Radford came away with the 56-52 win.

Radford entered the contest averaging 65.4 points per each Big South game, yet the Camels held RU to 56 points, the second lowest point total for the Highlanders in a conference win this season.

The Camels fell to 3-5 in conference action with the loss and 11-8 overall, while Radford improved to 7-1 in Big South play and 13-6 overall.

Up next, Campbell travels to Farmville, Va., to face Longwood on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
