WILMINGTON, N.C. - Ja'Cor Nelson led all scorers with 18 points but UNCW sank its free throws in overtime to top Campbell 81-76 Tuesday night at Trask Coliseum.
Jaylen Sims led five UNCW (2-1) scorers with 15 points which included 7-of-8 shooting from the stripe. Kai Toews and Jay Estime' followed with 12 each while Mike Okauru and Shykeim Phillips tallied 12 respectively.
With 2.3 second remaining and trailing 62-61 in regulation
Cory Gensler, who finished with 15 points, drove into the lane and drew a foul.He then knocked down 1-of-2 from the stripe to send the game to overtime.
Campbell (2-1) trailed by seven, 60-53, with 3:12 remaining but pulled back to within one point after a Gensler lay in and a turnover in the UNCW backcourt. Jesús Carralero then followed with back-to-back buckets to narrow the deficit.
Campbell took the lead 61-60 with 21.6 remaining on the clock when Toews made a pair of three throws with 13 ticks remaining on the ensuing possession before Gensler drained the game-tying free throw.
UNCW pushed its lead to seven twice in the overtime period including the last mark when Marten Linssen finished down low to make it 73-66 with 1:40 to play.
Jordan Whitfield, who scored all nine of his points in the overtime segment, bucketed a layup with 16 seconds to play to cut the lead to three, 76-73, before Sims pushed the lead back to four.
Gensler then followed with his second triple of the night to trim it back to one, 77-76.
Sims knocked down two more freebies before Gensler's three pointer with two seconds remaining missed before an ensuing foul with 0.3 seconds remaining.
UNCW netted 22 of 26 free throws on the night to Campbell's 5-of-6 performance while the Seahawks 56% shooting from long range amassed the Camels' 24% mark.
Cedric Henderson also added 10 points for the Camels on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and six boards.
Campbell concludes a two-game road swing on Saturday at the Citadel with tip-off set for 1:00 p.m.
