Stingy defense leads Campbell to fifth straight over WCU

Campbell held WCU to just five fourth quarter points

CULLOWHEE, N.C. ­- Campbell held Western Carolina to just 12 second half points in route to a 61-40 win Thursday night at the Ramsey Center.
 
The Catamounts (1-4) were held to just eight points in the third and five in the final period as a part of just 19.2% shooting in the second half. The Camels (2-1) were able to hold WCU to 28.3% shooting from the floor over the entire game.
 
Kianna Speight led all scorers with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting and 4-of-5 from deep. Shy Tuelle also added nine and Hayley Barber eight in the Camels fifth straight win over the Catamounts.
 
Jewel Smalls led the Catamount offense with 11 points on 4-of-17 shooting followed by Lauren LaPoint with nine points on a 3-of-9 effort from the field.
 
Campbell's largest run of the contest came at the start of the third period when the Camels traded buckets and then sprinted on a 14-0 run to cushion the lead.

Campbell was able to get out and run where they scored 17 points in transition to WCU's two on the night. The Camels also edged WCU in points off turnovers, 13-8, second-chance points, 7-0, and bench points, 23-8, as nine different Camels scored.
 
In the second period, the Camels allowed WCU to shoot 7-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-6 from deep but allowed just one triple in the third on 1-of-4 shooting and none in the final period on 0-of-9 shots from deep.
  
Campbell concludes a three-game road swing next Tuesday at North Carolina Central with tip-off set for 11:00 a.m.
