Camels eye wins record
At 6-4 overall on the year, Campbell will look to set a single-season program record for wins at Charleston Southern. The Camels have posted at least six in each of the last three years, matching a program best in the category. In the programs previous six years, the five win mark had only been reached once (6 in 2011).
Campbell finished its 2019 home slate at 4-2, tying a program record for home wins in a year. The Camels' only two home losses came at the hands of top-15 ranked Kennesaw State (No. 11) and Big South Champion Monmouth (No. 15).
After going 1-4 in its inaugural Big South season, Campbell is 3-2 in the conference in 2019, falling only to those two top-15 opponents.
Last time out
Pete Guerriero ran for a career-high 237 yards and No. 15 Monmouth defeated Campbell 47-10 at Barker-Lane Stadium to claim the Big South Conference championship. Guerriero had touchdown runs of 75, 57 and 2 yards, and also hauled in a 50-yard catch and run from Kenji Bahar for the Hawks (9-2, 5-0), who won their sixth-straight game.
Monmouth outgained the Camels 538-277, including a 333-108-yard edge on the ground, converting four Campbell turnovers into 14 points. Campbell (6-4, 3-2) dropped its third-straight outing. Bahar completed 11-of-20 passes for 205 yards and two scores. Lonnie Moore had three receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown.
Williams named to Jerry Rice Award watch list
Campbell quarterback
Hajj-Malik Williams has been named to the STATS Jerry Rice Award watch list, presented annually to the FCS freshman of the year.
A freshman from Atlanta, Ga., Williams has thrown for 1,898 yards and 16 touchdowns this season, standing fourth and second on the CU single-season lists, respectively. Williams' 1,898 passing yards is the most ever by a Campbell freshman. The QB has also rushed for 590 yards and seven more touchdowns.
Williams has accounted for both a touchdown throw and a rushing score in five games this season, ranking third in the Big South in total offense, and leading all conference freshman.
Williams has been named Big South Freshman of the Week four times, as well as honorable mention STATS FCS Freshman of the Week five times this season.
Leading the Camels
In addition to Williams' 2,488 yards of total offense,
Johnathan Hawkins has rushed for 481 yards with six touchdowns, adding another receiving TD, while
Cameron Davis has posted 394 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
Bryant Barr also adds three rushing TDs.
Caleb Snead owns a team-best 554 receiving yards with six touchdowns, while
Davarius Bargnare has hauled in 331 yards and two TDs.
Jalen Kelsey tacks on another six receiving TDs with 462 yards.
Justice Galloway-Velazquez paces the CU defense with 96 tackles, adding 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, an interception and a blocked kick.
Darion Slade has also posted 58 stops with an interception and a forced fumble, while
Damien Dozier has collected 50 tackles with 8.0 stops for loss.
Brevin Allen adds a team-best 10.0 tackles for loss, including 5.5 sacks.
Camels nearing records
In addition to Williams leading Campbell to what could be its most efficient passing season to date, several other Camels are nearing program records.
With six receiving touchdowns apiece,
Caleb Snead and
Jalen Kelsey are both four away from
Aaron Blockmon's single season school record. With 38 yards from Kelsey in CU's finale, the pair would become only the second duo in school history with 500 or more yards each in the same season, a feat Snead completed with Blockmon last season.
With 96 tackles on the year,
Justice Galloway-Velazquez comes in just behind
Jack Ryan's record of 103, set in 2017.
Brevin Allen's 5.5 sacks also ranks eighth on the Campbell single season list, but just 3.0 off the record.
Kicker
Colin Gary needs one field goal to set a single-season record. His nine makes are tied with Adam Willets (2009, 2010) and
Mitchell Brown (2014).
Brad Dennis is also under a yard shy of his own yards per punt record of 43.21, currently carrying a 42.39 average. The redshirt senior has also pinned opponents inside the 20 a record 21 times.
Scouting Charleston Southern
The Buccaneers come into Saturday's game at 5-6 overall, while knotted with Campbell in the Big South standings at 3-2. Since starting the season 0-4 against a challenging schedule, Charleston Southern is 5-2 in its last seven outings, currently on a three-game winning streak, including a 27-7 win at Presbyterian last week.
Jack Chambers leads the Bucs with 164.7 passing yards per game, throwing 10 touchdown passes. Chambers is also CSU's leading rusher at 464 yards, adding five TDs on the ground. Kameron Brown has hauled in seven touchdown passes, totaling 513 yards. On the defensive side, J.D. Sosebee owns 95 tackles, while Nick Salley and Anton Williams have combined for 31.0 tackles for loss.
The Camels and Buccaneers will be meeting for the fourth time, and second as Big South opponents following last season's 12-7 CSU win in Buies Creek. The Bucs have taken all three previous meetings.
Youthful Camels turning heads
One of the youngest teams in FCS, Campbell will lose just 17 seniors from its 2019 squad, set to return 12 of its top-15 leaders in all-purpose yards, and 641 of its 773 tackles.
Of its running back stable, CU will lose only graduate
Johnathan Hawkins, set to return 1,342 of its 1,823 rushing yards. The Camels will also bring back 1,753 of 1,967 receiving yards, not to mention all of QB
Hajj-Malik Williams' 2,488 yards of total offense.
On the defensive side, Campbell will bring back its top six tacklers, and eight of its top 10 stoppers.
