BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
LaDarius Knight came off the bench to lead five players in double figures and Campbell defeated Central Penn 101-47 Friday night at Gore Arena.
Knight scored 13 points,
Messiah Thompson and
Austin McCullough added 12 apiece and
Milos Stajcic and
Trey Spencer 10 each for the Camels (2-0), who shot 64 percent from the floor in the second half.
Campbell forced 24 Central Penn turnovers and finished with a 36-6 advantage in points off miscues, while the Camel bench outscored the Knights reserves 66-3.
Noah Baylor led Central Penn with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Marqel Wansley added 12.
Campbell scored the first 14 points of the game, made eight of its first nine shots from the floor and led 19-2 with 14:43 to play in the opening half.
The Camels extended the margin to 43-16 at halftime and outscored the USCAA member Knights 58-31 in the final period.
Knight made 4-of-6 shots, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, in 16 minutes off the bench. Thompson dealt six assists for Campbell, which had 26 assists on 35 made shots. CU finished 17-of-37 (.459) beyond the arc as eight Camels connected from long range.
On the night, Campbell made 54.7 percent (35-64) of its field goal attempts and committed only seven turnovers.
Ja'Cor Nelson finished with four steals in just 13 minutes. No Campbell played more than 18 minutes and 13 of the 14 players in uniform scored.
Central Penn shot just 37.5 percent (18-48) on the game and hit only 4-of-17 from 3-point distance and 7-of-15 from the line.
Campbell starts a two-game road stretch Tuesday in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at UNC Wilmington.
- CU has won its last 14 home openers, including all 12 since Gore Arena opened in '08-09.
- The Camels have won their last 17 games against non-Division I opponents. CU has topped the 100-point barrier five times in those contests and scored 90-plus points on eight other occasions.
