Hampton edges women’s hoops 61-50

HAMPTON, VA. – Hampton closed the game on an 8-0 run to edge visiting Campbell 61-50 Tuesday night at the HU Convocation Center.

Hampton moved to 13-9 on the season and 9-2 in Big South play, while Campbell dipped to 14-9 overall and 6-6 in conference games.

After Hampton led 47-36 with 18 seconds to go in the third quarter, the Camels mounted a 10-2 run that included a pair of Shy Tuelle triples, cutting the Pirates lead to 49-46 with Hayley Barber's driving lay-in. Jumpers from Laren VanArsdale and Mahaley Holit were answered by back to back Taya Bolden baskets, again trimming the Hampton lead to three at 53-50 with 2:24 to play.

From there, the Pirates connected on 6-of-8 from the free throw line and Kaylah Lupoe added a jumper, while Campbell went 0-for-4 from the field with two turnovers down the stretch.

Ashley Bates led Hampton with 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting with seven rebounds and six steals, while VanArsdale chipped in 13 points. Lupoe added 12 points and five blocks in the win, while Holit tallied 10 points and seven assists with five boards.

Bolden paced Campbell with her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and a season-best 15 rebounds. Tuelle tallied 13 points, knocking down three from distance, while Lauren Carter registered 11 points on the night.

The Pirates also used a 10-0 run in the first half to build a 28-20 lead with 1:07 to play in the second stanza. Tuelle's layup with 35 seconds to go ended the Pirate spurt and a 7:16 Campbell scoring drought.

In the team's 12th Big South game of the season, Tuesday's loss marked only the fourth time the Camels have allowed 60 or more points.

Hampton converted Campbell's 24 turnovers, which matched a season-high, into 23 points.

Next up, the Camels will head on the road, traveling to Gardner-Webb on Saturday, February 16. Campbell returns to Buies Creek on Tuesday, February 19, hosting Charleston Southern.
