BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell wrapped a 19-5 run around halftime and went on to defeat High Point 61-58 Thursday at Gore Arena in front of a national TV audience on ESPNU.
Chris Clemons scored 27 points,
Andrew Eudy added 16, plus a career-high 15 rebounds, for the Camels (16-11, 9-4), who moved into second place in the Big South Conference standings.
Jahaad Proctor led High Point (14-13, 7-6) with 17 points, while Jordan Whitehead added 13 and 10 rebounds for the Panthers, who committed 16 turnovers – 12 in the final period.
The nation's leading scorer (29.8), Clemons (3033 points) moved by Hersey Hawkins of Bradley (3008 from 1984-88) into eighth place on the NCAA Division I all-time scoring list and hit double digits for the 109th-straight game, third longest in D1 history.
High Point hit its first three triples and took its largest lead (25-16) on Whitehead's jumper from the elbow with 4:59 left in the opening half. However, Eudy scored on a spin move in the paint, Clemons got the roll on a three and
Cory Gensler scored twice on backdoor layups to draw the Camels even at 25.
The Panthers led 26-25 at the break, but Campbell took the lead for good (33-30) on Clemons' wing trey that started an 11-0 run and ignited a season-high crowd of 2952, the seventh-largest in Gore Arena history.
Playing without their second-leading scorer Brandonn Kamga, who had 17 points and 11 rebounds in a 58-57 win over the Camels two weeks ago at High Point, the Panthers missed 16 of their last 17 attempts beyond the arc.
Campbell led 55-40 after Eudy's bucket in the lane with 4:58 to play before High Point pulled within 56-48 with 2:44 to play. However, Eudy converted both ends of a 1-and-1 with 1:39 remaining and High Point didn't score again.
The Camels finished with a 15-7 edge in points off turnovers, blocked a season-high seven shots (three by Eudy) and matched their season-low with four turnovers. Gensler finished with 8 points, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 4 steals without committing a turnover in 36 minutes.
High Point shot 34 percent (17-50) from the floor, hit 4-of-17 threes and 10-of-14 (.714) from the field. Despite holding 42-31 edge on the boards, the Panthers finished with just a 13-11 edge in second-chance points.
Campbell shot 39 percent for the night, made 6-of-30 (.200) beyond the arc, and 9-of-11 (.818) from the line.
Off to the team's best start in league play since '11-12, Campbell has won five of its last seven outings and improved to 10-3 at home, 6-1 vs. Big South foes. The Camels return to action Saturday in a 3:00 p.m. tip-off at Longwood.
