BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Freshman lefty Ryan Chasse struck out a career-high seven across 5.0 innings in his first start at Jim Perry Stadium as Campbell defeated Georgetown 7-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Chasse (1-0) allowed just four hits and three walks in his second start as a Fighting Camel. With 10 strikeouts through his first two starts (9.0 innings), the Apex, N.C. native ranks fifth overall in the Big South in total strikeouts, while also leading all Big South rookies.
Los Angeles Mission College transfer Jonathan Tyler earned the save, pitching the final two innings and striking out four of the eight batters he faced.
Georgetown starter Brent Killam (0-2) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on five walks and three hits through 5.2 innings of work.
Matthew Christian (2-for-4, 2 2B, RBI) logged his second multi-hit performance of the season with two doubles. The Opelika, Ala. native also swiped two bases. Luis Gimenez (2-for-4, 3 RBI) drove in three runs, while Christian, Matthew Barefoot (1-for-4, RBI), AJ Hrica (0-for-3, BB, RBI) and Spencer Packard (0-for-4, RBI) drove in one run apiece to help lead Campbell to the series-clinching victory.
Georgetown (0-5) hit a solo home run in the second and a two-run shot in the third to go up 3-0, but Campbell (4-2) responded with five runs in its half of the third by way of a leadoff double, a walk, a double steal, another walk, a single, another walk, another single and then a groundout. The first six batters – Christian, Cameron Witt, Collin Wolf, Barefoot, Hrica and Gimenez – reached base safely as the Camels scored their first four runs of the frame with no outs.
Christian led off the inning with a double into left center, Witt walked, and the two juniors executed a double steal. Wolf also drew a walk before Barefoot singled through the left side, scoring Christian. Hrica walked, which scored Witt, and then Gimenez singled to center, driving in Barefoot and Wolf. Finally, Packard grounded out to second, which plated Hrica for the fifth and final run of the inning.
The Hoyas used three-straight walks and an eventual single in the sixth to trim Campbell's lead to four, 5-4. Junior righty Wyatt Tyson came in the sixth with the bases loaded, and allowed just the one run to score. He also pitched the seventh, striking out the leadoff batter on way to a scoreless inning; he finished the night with two strikeouts across 2.0 innings.
The Camels scored one run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings, both on two-out base hits, to head to the eighth with a three-run advantage, 7-4. Tyler sealed the win by dealing two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth.
Campbell will go for the sweep of Georgetown on Sunday with the series finale set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
