Camels top Hoyas 9-5 to complete sweep

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Four Camels logged multi-hit outings, led by junior outfielder Cameron Witt's 3-for-4 showing, as Campbell completed the weekend sweep of the Georgetown Hoyas with a 9-5 win Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.

With a pair of singles and a double, Witt became the first Camel to record three hits in a single game this season. Matthew Barefoot (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 BB), Luis Gimenez (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 R) and Collin Wolf (2-for-4, 1 RBI, 2 R) were the other three Camels with multi-hit outings in the win.

Campbell's six stolen bases were the most in a single game since Mar. 13, 2018, when the Camels swiped eight bases in a 9-0 win over Rider. Campbell recorded 14 stolen bases in this weekend's series, going 14-for-17 in stolen base attempts. Through seven games, the Camels have stolen 19 bases, which leads the Big South and makes Campbell the only team in the league to steal double-digit bases this season. Charleston Southern and Longwood are tied for second with five stolen bases.

Campbell righty Landry Moore (1-0) earned his first win as a Fighting Camel, allowing no hits and no runs over 2.2 innings. The Benson, N.C. native struck out one batter and allowed two walks. Senior Phil Simpson went 2.0 innings of relief, striking out a team-high three.

Louisburg College transfer Kevin Westlake earned his second start of the season and first at Jim Perry Stadium, pitching the first three innings, giving up four runs on six hits. Tyson Messer closed out the game in the ninth, striking out one.

Campbell (5-2) got on the board quickly, scoring one run each in the first and second innings. In the first, Barefoot scored on a passed ball, and in the second, Gimenez's two-out RBI single into left field scored Witt.

Georgetown (0-6) scored four runs, two unearned, in the fourth to take the lead, but Campbell responded right back with two runs in its half of the inning. Again, Gimenez delivered a two-out RBI single into left field to score Wolf, cutting the lead to one. Gimenez swiped third before a throwing error by the Georgetown third baseman allowed Ty Babin (0-for-4, BB) to reach safely, which scored Gimenez, making it 4-4.

In the top of the fifth, Simpson set Georgetown down in order, inducing a groundout, fanning one batter and then catching a Hoya looking to end the frame. Campbell regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Wolf pushed an RBI single into center field, scoring Witt from second to give the Camels a 5-4 edge.

Simpson worked into a bit of trouble in the sixth, eventually loading the bases as Moore was called in from the bullpen. Moore allowed a bases-loaded walk, tying the game at 5-5, but ended the inning by inducing back-to-back ground balls for fielder's choices.

Following the seventh-inning stretch, Campbell regained the lead as Witt was hit by a pitch, Wolf reached on a walk and then Barefoot crushed a line drive down the left field line, scoring Witt. Spencer Packard (0-for-3, RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk to score Wolf.

Ahead 7-5, the Camels gained some insurance on a pair of RBI doubles in the bottom of the eighth, one each from Witt and Barefoot.

Up next, Campbell welcomes the nationally ranked N.C. State Wolfpack to Jim Perry Stadium for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 27. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
