RADFORD, VA. – Despite a career-high 22 points from
Hayley Barber, Campbell fell 61-57 at Big South-leading Radford Saturday at the Dedmon Center.
Radford moved to 19-6 overall and 13-1 in Big South games with its 11
th straight win, while Campbell fell to 16-10 on the year and 8-7 in conference play. CU came into the game winners of five of its previous six outings.
After the Highlanders led by as many as 11 in the third quarter, Campbell stormed back with a 25-8 barrage between the third and fourth quarters, turning the run into a 54-48 lead with 4:11 remaining in the game. Barber posted 11 while
Lauren Carter tallied seven points in the spurt, giving Campbell a six point advantage.
Four Campbell turnovers over its next six possessions, capped off by a steal and lay-in from Khiana Johnson returned the lead back to Radford, 58-57, with 1:02 remaining.
The Highlanders drained 11-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe over the final 3:22, and 22-of-31 in the second half alone in the win, despite shooting 3-of-21 (14 percent) from the floor in the half. Johnson's layup to give RU the lead was the only field goal for the Highlanders in the final 18:00 minutes of action.
Radford led by as many as 11 in the first half, racing out to a 14-3 lead to start the game before Campbell chipped away with a 25-13 march, taking its first lead, 28-27, at the 4:25 mark of the second period on Barber's third triple of the day.
Barber, who added four rebounds and three assists in the loss, made 7-of-14 from the field, including 6-of-10 from distance, the most three point makes by a Camel this season.
Lauren Carter posted 16 points and five boards, while
Luana Serranho chipped in 11 points for the Camels.
Lydia Rivers led Radford with 18 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while Johnson gathered 15 points, six rebounds and three assists. Destinee Walker also scored 10 in the win.
Saturday's contest was the second four-point game between the Camels and Highlanders, who took a 56-52 road win in Buies Creek on January 26. Radford entered Saturday with a plus-17.2 average scoring margin in Big South games this season.
Up next, Campbell continues its road swing, traveling to Winthrop on March 2 and USC Upstate on March 6. The Camels close out the regular season at home, hosting High Point on March 9.
