Camels eliminate Longwood in Big South first round

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell closed on a 14-2 run to eliminate Longwood 54-49 Tuesday night in the first round of the Big South Women's Basketball Championship at Gore Arena.

Campbell improves to 19-11 on the year, while Longwood closes out its season 3-27.

Longwood led 47-40 with 6:46 remaining in the fourth quarter, but four straight from the Camels, including a Kyra Davis and-one brought CU within five. Ashlyn Hampton tied it up at 49 with the first of two free throws, and after a Davis offensive rebound kept the possession alive, Davis nailed a three to put Campbell back on top, 52-49, at the 2:47 mark.

The Camels held Longwood scoreless over its last 5:54 of the night, as the Lancers missed their final six shots and turned the ball over four times in the stretch.

Hayley Barber paced the Camels with a team-high 15 points, adding four assists, two rebounds two steals and a block, while Davis posted 12 points, including eight in the fourth period. Led by Davis' 12, Campbell picked up 22 points off the bench.

Hampton also registered nine points on 4-of-4 shooting with two boards, while Taya Bolden collected six points with four rebounds.

The Camels turned 21 Longwood turnovers into 12 points, while CU committed nine, the second time this season with single digit miscues.

Longwood was led by Dayna Rouse's 18 points and nine rebounds, while Akila Smith chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds with two blocks. Mallory Odell tallied a game-high 11 rebounds with five points and three steals.

Campbell advances to face third-seeded Hampton in the quarterfinal round of the Big South Championship, hosted by High Point, on Thursday at 8 p.m.
