BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell began defense of its Big South Conference title Saturday with a 6-1 win over USC Upstate at the Nisbet Tennis Center.
 
The Camels (5-3, 1-0) won the doubles point; then claimed five singles matches to earn their fourth-straight dual victory.  Upstate dropped its fifth-straight outing.
 
Dustin Werner and Raphael Calzi extended their win streak to four at the top singles position, while Gerard Sola and Louis Monterosso won their third in a row at the number-three spot.
 
Bastien Huon improved to 6-1 in singles play with his fifth-consecutive win, a 6-2, 7-5 decision over Francisco Neto at number-two.
 
Gerard Sola was first off the court in singles play after a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at the fourth position over Frederick Sydow.  Ondrej Labik and Aaron Cabo posted straight-sets wins at the fifth and sixth places, respectively, while Calzi won a three-set match at the third spot.
 
The Spartans (1-5, 0-2) claimed their lone point at number-one singles where Ankush Arora outlasted Dustin Werner 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
 
Campbell concludes its home stand Tuesday against Duquesne (11:00 am) before traveling to South Carolina State Wednesday.
