Tribe take game one from Camels 5-2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. Campbell baseball was unable to overcome a five-run sixth inning by William & Mary as the Tribe won the series opener 5-2 on Friday night at Plumeri Park.

Both Grant Harris (2-for-4, 2B, R) and Spencer Packard (2-for-4, RBI) tallied their second multi-hit outings as Fighting Camels. Luis Gimenez (1-for-4, 2B, R) doubled for the fourth time this season and Zach Minnick (1-for-2) had a pinch-hit single to round out Campbell's six hits.

William & Mary's Wade Strain (2-0) was credited with the win, pitching the first 6.0 innings with four hits and two earned runs. Chris Farrell pitched the ninth to earn his second save of the year.

Logan Heintzman (0-1) took the loss as he was credited with five earned runs after pitching a third of an inning in the sixth.

Campbell starter Seth Johnson tossed 5.0 hitless and scoreless innings, striking out a career-high eight batters. He struck out the side twice, once in the second and once in the fifth. In the fifth, he sat down William & Mary's 3-4-5 hitters in order for his fifth, sixth and seventh strikeouts.

The Camels scored two in the fourth to jump ahead 2-0. Harris got the frame started with a line drive base hit that fell just in front of the W&M right fielder. Gimenez followed suit with a double into left field before Collin Wolf (0-for-4, RBI) scored Harris via an RBI groundout. Packard drove in Gimenez with a shallow sac fly to center.

William & Mary scored five runs in the sixth, capped off by a one-out, bases-clearing double by Hunter Hart. After the damage was done, Jack Yusko came in and got a strikeout and popout to end the inning. Including the two batters to end the sixth, the right-handed sidearmer retired eight of the final nine batters he faced; he struck out five.

In the top of the ninth, after a pair of walks and an error, the Camels loaded the bases with two away, but a strikeout looking ended the game.

Campbell will rematch with William & Mary Saturday afternoon, with game two of the three-game series slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch at Plumeri Park.
