WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Campbell baseball left 10 runners on base and only twice was able to get the leadoff batter on as William & Mary took game two 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park.
Matthew Barefoot (1-for-4, HR, RBI) tallied Campbell's only extra-base hit with a solo home run in the third inning, his second long ball of the season. Spencer Packard (2-for-4) notched two of Campbell's six hits on the day. With two singles, the junior is hitting 4-for-8 in the series and has recorded back-to-back multi-hit outings for the first time in his career.
Tribe starter Brodie Sheehan earned the win, tossing 6.2 innings while allowing just one run and striking out two. Zach Tsakounis pitched the final two innings and retired six of the eight Camels he faced, striking out three, for his first save of the year.
Despite tallying five strikeouts and giving up just three hits, Michael Horrell suffered the loss. He went a season-high 6.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs for his first quality start of the season. The senior righty sat the Tribe down in order four out of his six innings pitched: in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings.
The Campbell pitching staff – Horrell, Jonathan Tyler and Landry Moore – combined to strike out seven while allowing just three walks and five hits.
The Camels stole three bases on the day, one each by Barefoot, Grant Harris and AJ Hrica. Campbell has recorded multiple stolen bases in eight games this season, swiping 33 bases as a team, which leads the Big South and ranks in the top-10 nationally. With his stolen base in the seventh inning, Barefoot has 11 swipes; he is the only Big South player to have double-digit stolen bases so far this season.
Barefoot put the Camels ahead 1-0 in the third with a solo home run off the left-field scoreboard; however, William & Mary responded right back in the bottom half. Hunter Hart recorded the Tribe's first hit to lead off the frame and eventually scored after beating a tag at the plate during a fielder's choice.
The Tribe scored the final three runs of the game, taking the lead in the fifth with one run (2-1) before adding two more in the eighth (4-1).
The Camels will take on William & Mary on Sunday, Mar. 10 for the series finale. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Plumeri Park.
