Paladins slip past Camels 2-1

Senior Alexa Genas netted her second goal in as many games

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Alexa Genas scored for the second consecutive game but Furman defeated Campbell 2-1 Thursday night at Eakes Athletics Complex.

Trailing 2-0, Genas intercepted an errant pass at midfield and took it the distance passed the diving Furman (2-1) keeper for the Campbell (0-1-1) score in the 31st minute.

Isabella Gutierrez (1 goal, 1 assist) started the Furman threat in the 15th minute by feeding the ball up to Amanda Baker on the far side who crossed the ball into the box where Jasmine Green headed in the goal.

Later in the 20th minute, Gutierrez gathered a loose ball in the box by the near post and finished to make it 2-0.

Winning keeper Kellsey Weaver made two saves on the night while allowing one goal over the full 90 minutes.

"I thought we move the ball well at moments during the game and we were able to expose some areas," said Campbell head coach Samar Azem. "We found some really good opportunities and Alexa's goal was absolute class and composure. To have that much time and space and to finish the way she did is fantastic."

Reaghan Duval allowed two goals but registered five saves across the full time including a great save in the 52nd minute by sliding to make the stop in a one-on-one situation.

Genas had a pair of chances in the final four minutes with the first being a straight on shot from just outside the box that darted straight to the keeper. She later took a feed from Ashleigh Harris from outside the ball and tried to flick it into the goal but the diving keeper made the stop.

Early in the match in the 9th minute, Katie Lockwood dished a pair of balls into the box with the first to Rosie O'Neal who pushed the shot right followed by a feed to Genas who couldn't catch up and hit the shot to the left.

Campbell returns to action on Sunday with a home match against Coastal Carolina set for 6:00 p.m.
