Camels blank UNCG 2-0; unbeaten in last four

Morales, Jacquel score as CU improves to 3-0 at home

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell extended its unbeaten streak to four matches Friday with a 2-0 victory over visiting UNC Greensboro at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

Adrian Morales and Thibaut Jacquel scored, while keeper Samuel Lechuga registered his third-straight shutout for the Camels (3-1-1), who stand 3-0-1 since a season-opening loss at Memphis.

"Our team plays with a high commitment to defend as a group, and that's evident in the three clean sheets we've kept in a row," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder.

Morales scored in the seventh minute and Jacquel added the clincher just after the 85-minute mark for the Camels, who extended their shutout streak to 370 minutes.  In between the Camels finished with an 8-6 edge in shots, but did not allow one on target by the Spartans (1-4-0), who dropped their fourth-straight outing.

"We didn't create as many chances as we would like, but we created some dangerous opportunities," said Fonder. "I'm pleased that we were able to finish off two of them."

Just over six minutes into the match, Matt Lock dribbled deep into the UNCG end and squared the ball along to Morales, who launched a first-timer into the net for his third goal of the season.

UNCG's best opportunity of the opening half came when Albert Pedra launched a left-footed effort from about 25 yards, but it sailed well wide of Lechuga's right post.

In the 73rd minute, Nelson Oceano's in-swinging corner kick fell inside the Campbell box, but Lechuga covered the loose ball before a Spartan attacker could get off a shot in the crowded area.

Less than a minute later, Campbell nearly doubled the margin when Morales got off a shot in the UNCG box with keeper Ricky Zarri off his line, but Spartan left back Aidan Wixted cleared the ball off the line.

A counter attack down the left side resulted in Jacquel's second goal of the season.  Alex Egeonu played the ball former to Alemu Mercer-Miko, who crossed it into the area, where Jacquel's right-footed effort provided a two-goal cushion.  The assist was the team-leading third of the year for Mercer-Miko.

Not only did Campbell conclude its three-match home stand with wins over American, George Mason and UNCG, but CU outscored its three foes by a 9-0 aggregate.

Campbell returns to action Tuesday in a 7 p.m. kickoff at No. 15 Coastal Carolina.
