BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Emily Mitter logged her second straight double-double of the season with 18 assists and 12 digs to lead Campbell volleyball to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-5, 25-23) victory over North Dakota on day one of the Comfort Inn Fuquay Invitational on Friday night inside Gore Arena.
"I thought we played a really consistent and complete match against a quality North Dakota team that is strong and physical at the net," head coach Greg Goral said. "We were able to balance the offense nicely and were able to distribute the ball to nine different attackers. Everybody was affective."
Led by Sarah Colla's eight kills, four Fighting Camels recorded five or more kills in the sweep. Allena Heath added seven kills, Lailah Green had six kills and Melody Paige finished with five kills. Campbell hit a collective .221, good for their third straight match with an attacking percentage above .200.
Elyse Gross, the reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Week, again led the CU defense with 15 digs; she also had five assists.
"The chemistry throughout this whole team is excellent; it doesn't matter who we put out there." Goral said. "We're building this into something where we can be a very dangerous team when we get to the conference season. We're just going to continue to get better."
After taking the first set by 10, 25-15, the Fighting Camels opened the second set on 12-0 run before closing it out on a 6-0 run for an impressive 20-point win, 25-5. Campbell out hit North Dakota .385 to -.133 in the second set.
Campbell trailed 23-20 late in the third set but sealed the set and the match on a 5-0 run that featured a block by Patterson, ace by Heath, a pair of UND attack errors and a kill by Heath.
The Fighting Camels wrap up the weekend by playing a pair of matches Saturday. Campbell plays its first match at 1 p.m. against The Citadel before capping the weekend with a 5 p.m. contest against South Carolina State.
