Camels suffer 3-0 setback at ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C.   Campbell University volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision to the East Carolina Pirates Tuesday night inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

ECU improved to 12-1 with the win, while Campbell closed out its non-conference slate with a 6-7 record.

"We played really well tonight, played together and responded with urgency," said head coach Greg Goral. "We executed often and dictated play a lot. ECU just played a little better than us and found ways to score when they needed. We're looking forward to this opening weekend of conference play."

Sarah Colla led the Fighting Camels with 12 kills, her 12th match putting down double-digit kills. Melody Paige tied her season-high with eight kills while Allena Heath added seven kills.

Madee Miner dished out a team-high 13 assists, followed by Elyse Gross (10) and Emily Mitter (8). Mitter led Campbell defensively with 10 digs.

ECU's Sydney Kleinman totaled a match-high 17 kills while committing just two errors for a .652 hitting percentage. As a team, the Pirates hit a combined .394 while the Camels hit .204.

With Campbell trailing 22-20 in the first set, Goral called a timeout. Out of the break, ECU scored to go up by three, but a quick 3-0 Campbell run tied the set at 23-23, forcing ECU to take its timeout. An ECU kill and CU attack error sent the first set to the Pirates, 25-23.

In set two, the Fighting Camels faced a four-point deficit, 17-13, but a kill by Melody Paige sparked a 4-0 spurt to tie the set at 17-17. ECU called a timeout before closing the set on an 8-1 run, taking a 2-0 match lead.

ECU jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third set before Campbell closed the gap to one, 12-11, with an 8-2 run, started by a Heath kill. ECU reached set point at 24-20 before Colla put the Camels back on the board; however, a kill by ECU's Natalie Tyson sealed the match for the Pirates, 25-21.

Campbell opens Big South play at Hampton Saturday, Sept. 28 with a 2 p.m. first serve.
