BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Eren Elbustu scored twice to lead Campbell to a 3-0 win over George Mason Sunday afternoon at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Less than 48 hours after Friday's 4-0 win over American, the Camels (2-1-1) out-shot the Patriots (1-3) 19-4 and only allowed two shots on target in 88-degree temperatures and 66 percent humidity.
Aigbekan Nosegbe added his first goal of the season and
Samuel Lechuga registered his second-straight shutout in the nets for the Camels, who have not allowed a goal in the last 280 minutes. All three Camel goals were scored by players who came off the bench.
"It's very challenging playing a second game in a weekend, but we asked our guys to dig in, do their assignments on the field and put in a complete effort," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder. "We knew that depth was our strength coming into the season and it showed over the weekend as we were able to play our tempo and wear our opponents down."
Nosegbe opened the scoring in the 29th minute after he dribbled down the left flank, cut back at the top of the box and unleashed a right-footed shot into Tillman Theurich's net.
Elbustu doubled the margin just over nine minutes later with a well-placed 20-yard free kick that he curled over the wall and into the net.
The Camels nearly extended the lead in the 40th minute when Elbustu split the Mason back four with a well-weighted pass that put
Alex Egeonu one-on-one with the keeper. However, Theurich charged off his line to clear the ball off Egeonu's foot as the Camel striker attempted to dribble by the Patriot keeper.
Elbustu provided the third goal just 10:06 into the second period when he regained control of the ball deep in the George Mason end scored his second of the match.
Matt Lock's 68th minute left-footed shot beat Theurich, but Patriot defender Nick Malinowski was able to clear the ball off the line.
George Mason dropped its third-straight decision after a season-opening win against American.
The Camels conclude their three-match home stand Friday in a 7 p.m. kickoff against UNC Greensboro.
