Stingy defense strides Campbell past Winthrop to remain undefeated at home

The 8-0 home start marks the best home start since the 2011-12 season

BUIES CREEK, N.C. ­- Ten different players scored for Campbell and it held Winthrop to just 33 percent shooting to clinch a 63-47 win over Winthrop and to remain undefeated at home this season.
 
The home win pushed its win total in Gore Arena to 8-0 this season tying the best start at home for the Camels since 2011-12 season. With one more home win the Big South Conference-leading Camels could post its best home start since the 1997-98 season when Campbell started 12-0 at home.
 
Taya Bolden led all scorers with 11 points while Hayley Barber, Ashlyn Hampton and Kianna Speight all added eight for the Camels (11-5, 6-1 Big South) who never trailed.
 
The Eagles made a push early in the third period by generating an 8-0 spurt to cut the Campbell lead to 18 points, 50-22, with 4:47 remaining in the quarter but Campbell responded by pushing its lead back up to 29 later in the quarter with 38 ticks on the clock, its largest of the game.
 
Winthrop once against edged back and cut the Campbell lead to 16 points, 63-47, with a lone free throw with 21 seconds remaining as a part of a 7-0 stretch but could not inch any closer.
 
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield finished with nine points followed by Kem Nwabudu with eight for Winthrop (7-8, 4-2 Big South) who became the 10th team this season to shoot under 35 percent against the Camels.
 
Campbell was able to force 16 Winthrop turnovers which were converted into 17 points to pair with winning the points in the paint battle 32-20.
 
The Camels combined to 45.1 percent for the game despite hitting just 29 percent from three-point range on the night.
 
The 6-1 start in Big South play sits just one win shy of coach Ronny Fisher's first season when his Camels started league play with a 7-1 ledger.
 
Campbell hits the road once again this weekend with a trip to Presbyterian for a 2:00 p.m.
