COLUMBIA, S.C. – Athanas Kioko finished first and set a new facility record in the mile run as Campbell wrapped up day one at the Gamecock Opener on the campus of South Carolina.
Kioko clocked in his mile time at 4:10.41, breaking the previous facility record of 4:14.94 set by East Tennessee State's Adam Bradtmueller in 2019. Kioko's mile time ranks fifth all-time in school history.
The Machakos, Kenya native earned another podium finish in the 3000m, finishing the distance event in 8:06.12. Kioko, along with cross country teammates
Laderique McNeill (8:29.18) and
Hunter Gilbert (8:29.57), all set top-10 program records in the 3000m race.
Daequon Carr qualified for the 60m finals after nearly breaking his own school-record with a 6.82 time in the prelims. Carr ended his day with an eighth-place finish in the final round.
Freshmen
Nyla Ward and
Maura Lane both earned podium finishes in both of their debuts for Campbell. Ward cleared 5.84m in the long jump to earn second-overall while Lane topped 3.65m in the pole vault for third.
The Camels return to the action at the Gamecock Opener tomorrow to wrap up competition.
