BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Kieche White scored 21 points and Anissa Rivera added 16 to lead N.C. Central past Campbell, 70-65, on Wednesday's season-opener at Gore Arena.
The Eagles (1-0) forced 28 turnovers leading to 24 points against the Camels (0-1) while also scoring 16 second-chance points.
Campbell entered halftime up 33-25 and led by 15 with 3:56 remaining in the third quarter before N.C. Central used a 12-2 run to cut the Camels lead to 46-41 heading into the fourth.Â
White scored on a driving layup with 3:15 remaining as the Eagles managed to score three free throws to tie the game at 57-all at the end of regulation.Â
N.C. Central opened the first overtime with a layup from Paris McBride before Shy Tuelle responded on the other end to tie the game again. Both sides made just one free throw apiece in the period as the Eagles regained the lead on a Necole Hope jumper, making it 62-60. Tuelle went coast-to-coast after a missed shot by the Eagles, nailing a layup with 10 seconds remaining to force a second overtime with the score remaining tied, 62-62.
The Eagles would jump to a 68-63 advantage before Micaila Coleman scored on a driving layup. With under 25 seconds remaining Campbell had four shot attempts on the same possession but couldn't get a shot to fall as the Eagles held on for a 70-65 win.
Tuelle led Campbell with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field in 37 minutes. Taya Bolden came off the bench and recorded her 17th career double-double with 14 points and 12 boards while Luana Serranho scored 16 points and had six boards.
N.C. Central won for the first time in Buies Creek, breaking a 9-0 Campbell record that dated back to 1976. This also marked the first time the Eagles had won consecutive matchups after defeating the Camels last season 67-64 in Durham.Â
Campbell edged the Eagles in points in the paint 26-24 and in bench points 26-17.Â
Lauren McNamara-Clement moved up to sixth all-time in career blocks with 64 total after swatting three shots today, passing former Campbell standout Jennifer Martin (2003-07).
Coleman made her first appearance in 345 days for the Camels after missing half of the 2019-20 season due to injury.Â
The Fighting Camels return this Saturday against UNC Wilmington for its first road contest of the 2020-21 season at 2 PM. Fans will not be permitted inside at Trask Coliseum but can tune in to the game via a live stream provided by FloSports ($).Â
