Camels earn 70-57 win over UNC Wilmington

Bolden goes off for 21 points and 8 rebounds

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Taya Bolden had 21 points, Shy Tuelle had 18 and Luana Serranho added 17 as Campbell earned its first win of the 2020-21 season, 70-57 over UNC Wilmington at Trask Coliseum.

UNC Wilmington (1-1) led by six with 5:03 to go in the second quarter before Campbell (1-1) stormed back on a 10-3 run to close out the first half, capped off by a three from Tuelle.

The Camels stayed hot following halftime as the team jumped to a 16-1 run to open the second half. Bolden recorded 10 of her game-high 21 points on 5-of-5 shooting after playing all 10 minutes in the third, giving Campbell a 52-40 lead at the end of the period.

The Seahawks pulled the deficit within single digits after guard Za'Nautica Downs made a three-pointer, making it 59-50. Serranho answered back with a three of her own and Bolden added seven more as Campbell secured its first win of the season.

Bolden was just one point away from tying her career-best total of 22 she set on the road against Winthrop in 2019. Tuelle and Serranho scored in double figures for the second straight game, combining for seven of Campbell's nine shots from beyond the arc on the afternoon.

Lauren McNamara-Clement remained efficient on the defensive end, blocking three shots for the second time this season while grabbing eight boards. Freshman forward Christabel Ezumah came off the bench for four points in four minutes while Tatyana Carver (four points) and Faith Price (three points) also contributed off the bench for the Camels.

The Camels shot 51.9% from the field while holding the Seahawks to just 31.7% shooting in the game while Campbell had an 18-8 advantage in points off turnovers and a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Today's win marked the first victory over the Seahawks since 2013 as Campbell moves to 32-17 all-time against its in-state rivals.

The Fighting Camels remain on the road for a midweek matchup against UNC Greensboro next Tuesday, December 1 at 6 p.m.
