Staves and defense fuels 42-38 win over UNC Greensboro

Sophomore forward scores 10 off the bench in fourth quarter as Camels hold UNCG to just five points in final period

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Brittany Staves scored all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter as Campbell earned a 42-38 win over UNC Greensboro Tuesday evening at Fleming Gymnasium.

Campbell (2-1) entered the fourth quarter down by nine but outscored UNC Greensboro (0-2) by an 18-5 margin, keeping the Spartans to just 1-of-12 from the field in the final period.

Staves sparked the comeback in the fourth scoring eight straight off the bench and tying the game at 36-36 on a running jumper with 2:29 remaining.

UNC Greensboro's Cece Crudup would answer back, driving and scoring on a layup to put the Spartans back up 38-36 as both sides remained scoreless for the final two minutes of regulation until a second-chance bucket from Taya Bolden tied it at 38-all with less than seven seconds remaining.

A technical foul call on the Spartans immediately following the game-tying basket would send Shy Tuelle to the line as she would make both free throws to give Campbell its first lead since 4:39 in the first quarter. Luana Serranho would draw a foul after the Camels received the ball back, icing the game with two more made free throws.

Bolden led all scorers in the game with 12 points and a game-high 13 boards for her second double-double of the season. Staves added 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting along with grabbing three rebounds and blocking one shot while both Tuelle and Serranho chipped in six points each.

Crudup led the way for the Spartans with 11 points and four rebounds while guard Tori Powell added nine as UNCG led by as many as 12 points late in the second quarter.

UNC Greensboro shot 31.3% from the field marking the third straight game CU has held an opponent under 33% this season.

Campbell held a 16-8 advantage in points off turnovers and 8-2 advantage in second-chance points during the game.

The Camels are scheduled to return to action on Dec. 30 & 31 in its Big South opener at home against Winthrop. Tip-off is set for 2 PM on ESPN+.
