ELON, N.C. – Hunter McIntosh scored 23 points and Elon used a 16-4 run midway through the second half to grab the lead and go on to a 66-56 win Wednesday at the Schar Center.
Kris Wooten and Jerald Gillens-Butler contributed 12 points each for the Phoenix (3-0), while Hunter Woods added 11 for Elon, which had not played since Nov. 28 due to a COVID pause.
Jordan Whitfield led Campbell with 14 points before fouling out with 2:11 to play.
Cedric Henderson, Jr. (12) and Gediminas Mokšeckas (10) also hit double figures for the Camels (4-1).
Henderson made both ends of a 1-and-1 to put the Camels ahead 44-43 with 11:23 to play, but Wooten hit back-to-back threes and McIntosh a step-back triple to cap the decisive spurt.
The Phoenix shot 50 percent (22-44) from the floor and made 11-of-21 beyond the arc, 11-of-14 from the line. Campbell finished 19-of-45 (.422) from the field, 5-of-19 from 3-point distance, and 13-of-26 from the stripe.
Elon closed the first half on a 17-6 run – capped by McIntosh's three at the buzzer – and led 32-26 at the break. The Phoenix shot 56 percent (10-18) from the floor and made 6-of-11 threes (.545) before intermission, but committed 13 first-half turnovers. McIntosh scored 11 first-half points and Gillens-Butler 10.
Campbell made 10-of-26 (.385) first-half shots, 4-of-13 (.308) beyond the arc. Henderson and Whitfield led CU with 8 points apiece before halftime.
The Camels return to action Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. start at NC State.
