Winthrop hangs on 84-83 vs. upset-minded Camels

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Chandler Vaudrin scored 17 points and Winthrop made enough free throws down the stretch to hold off Campbell 84-83 Wednesday at the Winthrop Coliseum.

Charles Falden added 16 points, including 8-of-10 from the stripe, for the Eagles (6-0, 3-0 Big South), who entered the contest ranked No.-2 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25.

Jordan Whitfield led Campbell (4-4, 0-1) with 17 points; Jesús Carralero and Austin McCullough chipped in 16 each and Cedric Henderson, Jr. 12 for the Camels, who tied a school record that has stood for 43 years after five players fouled out.

Winthrop, which scored its final 12 points from the line, led 76-67 after Falden made a pair from the line with 2:14 to play.  Michael Anumba knocked down a pair for an 82-75 edge before Whitfield's 3-point play trimmed the gap to four (82-78) with nine seconds left.  Falden then hit the second of two charity shots twice – with 8 and 1 seconds left – before McCullough's triple at the horn cut the final margin to one.

The Camels were whistled for 38 fouls, one shy of the school-record 39 set on Dec. 14, 1977 against Northwestern (La.) State – the same night that five Camels were disqualified by fouls.

In his first start of the season, Carralero eclipsed his career scoring high (15 on Nov. 5, 2019 at Coastal Carolina) by going 6-of-7 from the field and matched his career best with five assists.  McCullough was 3-of-3 beyond the arc, while Whitfield made 7-of-14 overall.  Henderson was 5-of-7 from the floor but was limited to 19 minutes of action before fouling out with 5:24 to play.  After missing the first seven games due to injury, Milos Stajcic came off the bench to score eight points in 21 minutes.

Campbell made seven of its first eight shots and took a 16-11 lead on Whitfield's three midway through the first half.  However, the Eagles rallied and led 39-33 at the break, thanks in part to a 14-0 advantage in second-chance points.

CU opened the period on a 12-5 spurt and regained the lead (45-44) on McCullough's triple with 15:58 remaining.  Defending Big South champ and preseason favorite Winthrop responded with a 12-2 burst over the next 5:17 to grab a nine-point advantage.

As a team, Campbell shot 62 percent (31-50) from the floor and made 8-of-14 (.571) threes.  Winthrop finished 21-of-55 (.382) from the field and just 5-of-22 (.227) from long range, but made 12 more free throws (37-50) than the Camels attempted (13-25).  The Eagles converted a 45-22 rebounding edge into a 20-0 margin in second-chance points.

The teams conclude their two-game series Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Rock Hill.  The contest will air on ESPN+.
