SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Shy Tuelle scored a career-high 23 points to help Campbell edge USC Upstate 80-72 in double overtime Saturday afternoon inside the G.B Hodge Center.
Tuelle posted a career-best on 8-of-18 shooting and a 7-of-17 line from behind the arc to lead four double-digit scorers for the Camels (15-5, 10-1) who won its eighth-straight contest.
The eight-straight wins marked the longest streak under fourth-year head coach
Ronny Fisher and the Camels have now posted their best start in league play since the 2000-01 season when the Camels started 13-0.
After Upstate scored the opening basket on a jumper from Riley Popplewell in the second overtime, Campbell went on a 6-0 spurt charged by five straight from Tuelle to push the Campbell lead to 70-66 with 2:27 left to play.
Upstate cut the lead back to two points on a pair of free throws from Popplewell with 2:13 to play but the Camels went on another 6-0 spurt to eventually seal the road win and remain atop the Big South Conference Standings.
Tuelle's career night was accompanied by 16 points from
Hayley Barber who made the final two free throws of the game with 13 seconds remaining.
Luana Serranho also added 14 points and
Ashlyn Hampton 12 finishing just one point shy of matching her career-high.
Brianna Lewis scored 25 points and Riley Popplewell added 17 for the Spartans (6-14, 1-10 Big South) who have lost 10 straight.
In the closing seconds of regulation, Anda Kuzmina missed a layup and the ball rolled out of bounds off of Campbell. On the ensuing inbounds pass with 0.6 seconds on the clock, Hampton tipped the inbounds pass to push the clock to 0.0 and force overtime.
Hampton had a contested look at the hoop in the final second of the first OT period but her layup rimmed out forcing the eventual second overtime.
Campbell dominated the points of the bench category 39-14 in large part to Tuelle's efforts and the Camels were able to force 17 Spartan turnovers for 19 points.
Campbell, who continually makes its way to a program-record 12 game win streak set in 2001, participates in its midweek absence before hosting UNC Asheville on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
