Longwood holds off Camels 57-56

Gensler leads CU with 15 points

FARMVILLE, VA. – In a game that included nine lead changes, Longwood held off Campbell 57-56 Monday night at Willett Hall.

Longwood (10-16, 5-8) led 57-51 after Leslie Nkereuwem scored underneath with 2:46 to play.  However, Cory Gensler hit a wing three and Jordan Whitfield two free throws to bring CU with 57-56 with 39 seconds to play.

Heru Bligen's layup was off the mark with 10 seconds to play and the Camels had a chance to win the game, but the Camels committed their 13th turnover.  Nkereuwem missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and CU had a last chance to cover the entire court with 1.4 seconds left, but Bligen deflected the inbound pass and time expired.

Four Lancers – JaShaun Smith, Shabooty Phillips, Nkereuwem and Christian Wilson – finished with nine points.  Longwood shot 42.3 percent on the night, but committed only six turnovers.

Gensler led Campbell (12-13, 3-10) with 15 points, 12 in the first half.  Whitfield finished with 12 and Cedric Henderson, Jr., 10 for the Camels, who shot 45.2 percent (19-42) overall, hit 9-of-20 threes and 9-of-14 (.643) from the stripe.

Trailing 34-31 at the break, Campbell wrapped a 14-4 run around halftime and took a 42-38 lead on Henderson's free throw with 15:07 remaining.

Longwood responded, however, with an 11-0 burst and grabbed its largest lead (49-42) on Wilson's wing three with 9:54 to go.

Joshua Lusane's layup brought CU back within 51-49 with 6:16 to go, but the Camels made only one shot from the field in the final 5:56.

Campbell jumped to an 8-0 lead thanks to a pair of Gensler threes and held a 19-12 edge after two Milos Stajcic free throws. However, Longwood answered with a 9-0 run to take its first lead (21-19) on Smith's drive with 7:45 to play.

The Lancers stretched the margin to 34-28 on Phillips' free throw with 13.9 seconds left before Whitfield trimmed the deficit to 34-31 on a buzzer-beating triple.

Longwood shot 50 percent (13-26) from the field, including 4-of-10 from 3-point distance, in the opening half and outscored the Camels 16-6 in the paint.  Campbell hit 11-of-23 shots from the floor (.478), including 7-of-13 (.538) beyond the arc in the opening period.

Campbell begins a two-game home stretch Thursday in a 7 p.m. start vs. Hampton.
