BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Cory Gensler scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds and Campbell defeated Hampton Thursday night at Gore Arena.
Messiah Thompson and
Austin McCullough added 10 points each off the bench for the Camels (13-13, 4-10 Big South), who held the Pirates to 29.8 percent shooting on the night.
Campbell held the nation's third-leading scorer, Jermaine Marrow, to 7-of-19 shooting and 22 points - two below his average (24.1). Forward Ben Stanley, who entered eighth in the country at 22.4 points per game, finished with 15 on 6-of-18 shooting.
The Camels led 36-24 at the break and by as many as 30 (70-40) when Gensler hit a pull-up jumper with 5:19 left in the contest. Campbell shot 50 percent from the field (28-56), 10-of-24 from 3-point range, and connected on 55 percent of its shots in the second half.
Hampton entered Thursday ranked 25th nationally in scoring (78.7) and sixth in free throws attempted, but the Camels held the Pirates to their lowest offensive output of the season.
Campbell jumped in front early and led 26-11 when
Joshua Lusane connected on a wing three with 6:49 to play in the opening period. The Pirates answered with a 9-2 spurt to draw within 28-20, but Campbell extended the lead to 12 at intermission.
CU shot 44 percent from the floor (12-27) in the opening half, made 4-of-10 threes and 8-of-10 from the stripe, while out-rebounding the Pirates 23-15. Hampton made just 29 percent (9-31) of its first-half shots, 2-of-9 from 3-point range and 4-of-6 from the stripe.
Marrow (11) and Stanley (11) combined for 22 of Hampton's 24 first-half points, but combined to shoot 8-of-21 in the process.
On the night, Gensler hit 7-of-12 shots and 10 different Camels scored.
Joshua Lusane finished with seven points, six boards and three blocks, while
Milos Stajcic came off the bench to grab five rebounds and deal a career-high five assists in just 15 minutes. CU finished with 18 assists and just seven turnovers, including a shot clock violation in the final minute of the contest.
Campbell returns to action Saturday when it hosts Radford at 4:30 p.m. The Camels will honor all-time leading scorer and current member of the Houston Rockets,
