BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After earning his 12
th win in his last 14 outings, Campbell's
Andrew Morgan has been named the Southern Conference's Wrestler of the Week for February 5-11.
Morgan, ranked No. 6 in the nation at 184 pounds, shut out No. 14 Matthew Waddell 5-0, and locked in Campbell's 26-11 win over Chattanooga on Saturday. The victory was Campbell's sixth straight dual win, remaining perfect in SoCon action.
Morgan's only defeats in his last 14 matchups have come at the hands of No. 1 Zahid Valencia of Arizona State and No. 4 Taylor Lujan of Northern Iowa. Four of those 12 wins have come against ranked opponents. The redshirt senior is 24-5 overall on the year and 8-1 in dual competition, including a 3-0 SoCon mark, ranking as high as No. 6 in the country at 184 (FloWrestling) heading into the week.
No. 20 Campbell moved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in SoCon matches with the win over Chattanooga. Including Morgan, six Camels are now at least 3-0 in SoCon action, including
Noah Gonser (4-0),
Josh Heil (3-0),
Quentin Perez (4-0),
Austin Kraisser (4-0) and
Jere Heino (4-0).
This is the seventh time a Camels has been named SoCon Wrestler of the Week this season, with Morgan becoming the second CU wrestler to take the honor multiple times in 2019-20, following Heil.
Korbin Meink and
Quentin Perez have also earned SoCon weekly honors.
The Camels will
host Appalachian State (8-2, 5-0 SoCon) on Thursday in a matchup of the SoCon's final two unbeaten squads in the league standings.
