ROCK HILL, S.C. --
Kianna Speight came off the bench to score 14 points to lead four double-digit scorers for Campbell who held off Winthrop 61-58 Tuesday night inside Winthrop Coliseum.
Trailing by three on the final possession, Jah'Che Whitfield heaved a desperation three-point with four seconds left but the air ball rolled out of bounds as time expired.
The win for Campbell (18-6, 13-2) tied a program record for Big South wins in a season and is three shy of the overall program league record which was set in 2001 when the Camels went 16-2 in the Trans America Athletic Conference. The road win also marked the seventh straight road win for the Camels and extended their record to 8-0 on Tuesdays.
Kianna Speight led all scorers with 14 points followed
Luana Serranho and
Hayley Barber who both scored 12.
Taya Bolden rounded out the group with 11 points and 11 boards for her second double-double of the season.
Winthrop (10-14, 7-8 Big South) pulled to as close as two points with 1:01 to play, 60-58, when Kem Nwabudu knocked down a jumper but
Kianna Speight responded by making one of two free throws with 13 ticks on the timer.
Nqabudu led the Winthrop charge with 12 points followed by Whitfield and Sydney Buckley who added 10 each.
Winthrop outlasted or drew even with the Camels in every specialty statistical category but the Eagles were held to just 1-of-9 or 11 percent shooting from long range compared to the Camels' 33 percent clip from deep.
Big South leading Campbell pushed its lead to as many as 13 with 5:37 left in the second period and led for 34:31 over the course of 40 minutes.
After reaching the 60 point barrier, Campbell now sports a 12-1 record this season when surpassing the mark.
Campbell returns to action on Saturday inside Gore Arena against Longwood at 2:00 p.m.
