Camels defeat Charleston Southern 66-51

CU holds Bucs to 28 percent shooting

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Jordan Whitfield came off the bench to score 16 points and Campbell held Charleston Southern to just 28 percent shooting Thursday in a 66-51 victory at the CSU Field House.

The Camels (14-14, 5-11 Big South) rode a 22-4 run midway through the first half and led by as many as 21 while holding the Bucs (13-15, 7-9) to their lowest offensive output in league play this year.

Whitfield made 7-of-8 shots, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and did not commit a turnover in 24 minutes.  Cory Gensler added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Cedric Henderson, Jr. (eight rebounds) and Trey Spencer added 10 points apiece.

Phlandrous Fleming, Jr., led Charleston Southern with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, but made just 6-of-15 from the floor.  Deontaye Buskey added 16 points on 5-of-16 shooting and Ty Jones 12 for CSU, which made only 3-of-18 threes (.167).

Campbell led for more than 38 minutes and outscored the Bucs in the paint by a 36-14 margin, while finishing with a 15-8 edge in points off turnovers.  CU committed just nine turnovers while finishing 28-of-54 (.519) from the floor.

CSU missed 18 of 19 shots midway through the first half in the midst of a 22-4 Camel run.  Whitfield scored 14 first-half points on 6-of-7 shooting for Campbell, which made 17-of-28 (.607) from the floor and 5-of-9 from 3-point range before the break.

Making his first start in 14 games, Spencer scored eight first-half points for the Camels, who enjoyed their largest half-time lead (41-21) against a Division I opponent this year.

The Bucs made just 7-of-28 (.250) shots in the opening period, including 2-of-11 from 3-point distance. In a 77-62 win last month in Buies Creek, Charleston Southern canned 13-of-25 (.520) threes.

After the last five games between the schools played in Charleston were decided by a total of 13 points, the Camels raced to a 20-point halftime lead. The Bucs cut the lead to 14 once – 49-35 on Fleming's jumper with 10:44 remaining – but drew no closer.

Playing in his 130th career game – tied with Chris Clemons and Andrew Eudy for most in school history – Gensler moved into 25th place on Campbell's career scoring list with 1,072 points.

Campbell concludes its Big South road slate Saturday at Gardner-Webb (5:30 p.m.).
