Campbell wrapped a 7-0 run around the half and
held off George Washington 11-9 on Sunday for its first win of the season. After George Washington went up 3-1, Campbell reeled off seven straight scores, including six in a row to close the first half, taking a 7-3 lead into the break, its largest halftime lead of the season.
Laura Will was one of six Camels with multiple points in the win, including four goals from
Julianna Sanchez.
Mackenzie Kolesar also scored twice, adding an assist, while
Sam Carey collected two goals and
Megan Matthews registered two assists.
Alexis McDaniel notched a goal and an assist apiece, while
Ally Heath also connected on an assist.
Carey tacked on three ground balls and five draw controls, helping Campbell own a 12-10 edge on the draw, including a 9-2 advantage in the first half.
Kennedy Boyle recorded three ground balls, three draw controls and a caused turnover, while
Alex Salim secured 13 saves with two ground balls for the Camels.
Salim, Sanchez take Big South weekly honors
Following a win at George Washington, Campbell's
Alex Salim and Julianna have been named
Big South players of the week. Salim was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week, while Sanchez claimed the league's Freshman of the Week honor for the second time this season.
Salim secured 13 saves with two ground balls for the Camels in an 11-9 win on the road at George Washington on Sunday. The redshirt junior helped Campbell hold its opponent to single digit goals for the first time this season in addition to earning its first win of the 2020 campaign.
Sanchez, meanwhile, netted her third hat trick of the season, posting four goals to help Campbell top GW. The Annapolis, Md. native registered three of her game-high four goals in the first half, sparking Campbell to an 8-3 lead, adding another in the second frame to help hold off the Colonials. The redshirt freshman added three draw controls in the win.
Leading the Camels
Sanchez paces the Camels with 17 points on 16 goals, adding 17 draw controls, while Kolesar owns 10 goals and three assists. Matthews has dished out a team-high nine assists with four goals, while Carey and Will have collected 12 points apiece.
Carey tacks on a team-high 25 draw controls with 12 ground balls, while
Rebekah Taylor has posted 16 ground balls and caused 11 turnovers.
Anna Ryan has also caused 10 turnovers with 14 ground balls. Salim, who owns at least 12 saves in every game this season, has fashioned a .503 save percentage, leading the Big South and ranks among the top-25 in the country.
Scouting Mount St. Mary's
The Mountaineers are 3-1 so far in 2020, taking two overtime wins, including an 11-10 victory over George Washington to start the season.
Jordan Butler, Kate Kinsella and Alayna Pagnotta have scored 10 goals each for Mount St. Mary's, while Zoe Hurlburt owns seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Jenna Oler adds a .506 save percentage.
The series
Campbell will be taking on the Mountaineers for the second time in program history on Wednesday, with Mount St. Mary's topping CU in
Buies Creek in 2019.
