Camel duo named to Big South all-decade team

Betz and Jacquel named among league's best over last 10 years

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Gideon Betz and Thibaut Jacquel of Campbell University have been named to the 2010-19 Big South Conference Men's Soccer All-Decade Team presented by Hercules Tires.  The league's All-Decade Teams were first unveiled as part of the Big South's 30th Anniversary celebration in 2013-14 to recognize the student-athletes and coaches who excelled in their respective sport in each decade since the Conference's founding in 1983.  Betz and Jacquel anchored the defense and attack of Campbell's back-to-back league championship teams in 2018-19.

The 2019 Big South Conference defensive player of the year and scholar-athlete of the year, Betz started all 22 matches for the Camels and directed a defense that led the Big South and ranked 14th nationally in goals-against average (0.752) and shutouts (10).  A central defender from Schlüchtern, Germany, Betz earned CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors for the second-straight year in 2019, was named second-team All-South region, first-team all-conference and to the Big South all-championship team.  The 2018 Big South Championship MVP, Betz was a four-time all-conference performer (just the 25th player in Big South history to earn that honor), who concluded his career with 74 appearances, including 73 starts.

Jacquel was named 2019 Big South attacking player of the year after he led the nation in total goals (18) and game-winning goals (7), while rating third in total points (41), seventh in points per game (1.95) and eighth in goals per game (0.86).  He was named third-team All-American, second-team All-South and to the Big South all-conference and all-championship teams after producing five multi-goal matches, including his first career hat trick in a 6-2 victory at Presbyterian.  A forward from Saverne, France, Jacquel also had two-goal outings in wins over UNC Wilmington, Radford, Wofford and Gardner-Webb during his junior year last fall.  In just two collegiate seasons, Jacquel already stands 23rd among Campbell's all-time scoring leaders with 57 points on 22 goals and 13 assists in 41 outings.

"This is an incredible accomplishment for both Gideon and Thibaut," said 2019 Big South Coach of the Year Dustin Fonder.  "To be named to the all decade team shows how highly regarded they are by their peers as soccer players and competitors. Our staff and their teammates hold them in the same regard as leaders and high character people. They both embody what being a winner is in school, socially and on the field. These two are worthy of all the accolades they receive."

A 15-person committee of Big South Conference administrators served as the official voting panel to determine the All-Decade Team, with fan voting comprising 20 percent of the overall total.  The 2010-19 Men's Soccer All-Decade Team is listed below in alphabetical order by position and features four forwards, four midfielders, four defenders, one goalkeeper and one head coach.  In case of ties, additional honorees have been added.
