BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The ASUN Conference announced the Men's Tennis 2001-10 All-Decade team as 19 student-athletes were named to the list across 10 programs. Campbell, UCF and Stetson each had three student-athletes named to the All-Decade Team.
Jiri Beranek, Andreas Mardbrink and Florent Wilpotte represented the Camels on the ASUN All-Decade team. After 17 years as an ASUN member (1994-2011), Campbell re-joined the Big South Conference in the summer of 2011.
During the decade, five programs captured ASUN Championship titles in ETSU (4), UCF (3), Belmont (1), FAU (1) and Georgia State (1). Campbell was runner-up in 2004.
To be named to the All-Decade Team an individual must have competed for at least two years in the decade as an ASUN student-athlete. Individuals that obtained one of the following criteria were named to the team; three First Team All-Conference selections (Singles), four All-Conference selections (Singles) or multiple Player of the Year honors. Individuals that obtained at least two of the following criteria were also named to the team; Player/Freshman of the Year or three All-Conference selections (Singles).
2001-10 ASUN Men's Tennis All-Decade Team
Jiri Beranek, Campbell
Beranek was named an All-Conference student-athlete three times while playing for Campbell which included First Team nods in 2004 and 2005. During the 2005 season, he was also a two-time Player of the Week.
Andreas Mardbrink, Campbell
Mardbrink was the men's tennis first student-athlete in Campbell history to earn three ASUN first-team all-conference selections, doing so from 2000-02. While playing with the Camels, he helped them advance to the ASUN Championship Quarterfinals twice.
Florent Wilpotte, Campbell
Wilpotte earned postseason accolades in four consecutive seasons: All-Freshmen Team (2003), Second Team All-Conference (2004, 2005), First Team All-Conference (2006). He was a member of the ASUN Championship runner-up squad for Campbell in 2004 and picked up a Player of the Week honor during his career.
Jordi Ballester, Jacksonville
A three-time First Team All-Conference selection in 2007-09, Ballester is one of two student-athletes in the Dolphins' program history to be named to the team three times. He also earned one Player of the Week award during his career.
Catalin Bradu, UCF
The 2003 Player of the Year, Bradu was an All-Conference First Team member from 2002-04. He is the only individual from UCF to hold this distinction and he also added two Player of the Week honors during his tenure as a Knight.
Piero Demichelli, Stetson
Demichelli earned First Team All-Conference honors four times in his career (1999-2002), a feat only accomplished by two others in Stetson's history. He was a member of one of the Hatters' top Men's Tennis seasons in 2000 where they reached the ASUN Championship Semifinals.
Doug Devriendt, FAU
The only ASUN Player of the Year in FAU program history, Devriendt earned the honor following the 2001 season when the Owls won their only conference championship. He also appeared on the All-Conference First Team in 2001 and 2002.
Marcus Echtler, Stetson
Along with being Stetson's first ASUN Player of the Year in 2006, Echtler is also the only Hatter to compete in the NCAA Championship, doing so that same year. He is one of three in program history to earn four First Team All-Conference nods and was a member of the 2005 All-Freshman Team.
Albano Franco, Georgia State
With a trio of All-Conference selections, including First Team in 2002, Franco is one of two student-athletes from Georgia State to be chosen three times (2002-04). He was a member of the Panthers' ASUN Championship squad in 2002.
Ener Gursoy, UCF
Gursoy was named Freshman of the Year in 2003 and was the second consecutive honoree from UCF. Along with joining the All-Freshmen Team in 2003, he was a Second Team All-Conference selection in 2004 and earned a First Team nod in 2005.
Martin Hehensteiger, Jacksonville
A three-time All-Conference member from 2003-05, Hehensteiger earned First Team honors in 2004. He was a member of the All-Freshmen lineup in 2003 and earned two Player of the Week awards during his career at Jacksonville.
Hicham Laalej, Stetson
Laalej earned both the Player and Freshman of the Year distinctions following the 2007 season and is the only Hatter to win both awards. Along with First Team All-Conference selections in 2007 and 2008 he was also a member of the 2007 All-Freshmen Team.
Felipe Lima, Belmont
A three-time First Team All-ASUN selection from 2004-06, Lima helped Belmont win its only conference title in 2006. The former Bruin was also a Second Team All-Conference selection and a member of the All-Freshmen Team his rookie season in (2003).
Irving Morales, Troy
A two-time Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons of 2004 and 2005, Morales was also the 2004 Freshman of the Year. He appeared on the All-Conference First Team in both of the aforementioned seasons and joined the All-Freshmen Team roster in 2004.
Enrique Olivares, ETSU
Olivares had a decorated Buccaneers career earning Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009 along with being named Freshman of the Year in 2006. He is the only member of the All-Decade Team to pick up wins at the NCAA Championship with two in 2008 and one in 2009. He is also ETSU's only four-time First Team All-Conference selection (2006-09).
Matias Ormanza, Georgia State
Ormanza was honored as both the ASUN Player and Freshman of the Year in 2002, the first Freshman of Year from Georgia State and the only individual to be named the conference's top player. He also earned First Team All-Conference nods in 2002 and 2003.
Edgar Rodriguez, USC Upstate
The top freshman in the ASUN following the 2009 season, Rodriguez is the only Freshman of the Year during USC Upstate's history in the league. Along with two First Team nods (2009-10) and an All-Freshmen Team selection (2009), he also earned two Player of the Week awards in his career.
Gabriel Strangberg, UCF
Strangberg holds the distinction of being the first Freshman of the Year in ASUN history after earning the inaugural honor in 2001. He is one of two to earn the award from UCF in the program's history and earned All-Conference First Team distinction in 2002 and 2003.
Grega Teraz, ETSU
Teraz earned three All-Conference selections during his career with a Second Team honor in 2009 and First Team nods in 2010 and 2011. He stands as the only student-athlete in ETSU's history to join the First Team twice while also earning two Player of the Week awards.
