Last time out
Campbell led Appalachian State for nearly the entire first half before falling 52-21 at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Playing a third-straight FBS opponent on the road, the Camels (0-3) led 13-10 before the Mountaineers moved in front on Daetrich Harrington's TD with just 24 seconds left in the opening half.
Harrington rushed for 211 yards on 32 carries and four scores to lead Appalachian State (2-1), which finished with 404 overall yard on the ground. Nate Noel added 131 yards on 14 attempts and one touchdown, while Zac Thomas completed 12-of-18 passes for 131.
The Mountaineers out-gained the FCS member Camels 535-305. Campbell quarterback
Hajj-Malik Williams completed 7-of-19 passes for 101 yards, while running for 44 more and two scores.
Jalen Kelsey had three catches for 61 yards, while
Austin Hite hauled in a pair of receptions for 93 yards, 87 coming on a late TD.
Leading the Camels
Through three games of their abbreviated 2020 schedule, quarterback
Hajj-Malik Williams leads the Camels, accounting for 654 yards and six of CU's 10 touchdowns. The sophomore, named the Big South's 2020 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and a 2019 Freshman All-American, has thrown for 475 yards and two TDs, running for a team-best 179 yards and four more scores.
The duo of
C.J. Freeman and
Bryant Barr have combined for 270 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, while
Jalen Kelsey owns 12 catches for 159 yards, both team bests, adding a touchdown.
Darion Slade leads the Camel defense with 26 tackles, while
Jonathan Jones and
Ray Miller have notched 22 stops each.
Hill takes over at tight end
Stepping in as the starting tight end for the first time in his career, junior
Julian Hill has impressed through three games in 2020, hauling in six catches for 102 yards. That mark is already a single-season high for Hill, who owned seven career catches for 90 yards heading into the season (previous high of 85 in 2019).
Hill's 102 yards, despite the shortened season, are the most by a CU tight end since
Michael Wooten put up 266 yards (20 catches, TD) in 2017. Wooten started the final 32 games of his career.
Camels face former squads
In three of four games this fall, Camels will be facing off against their former schools.
Redshirt junior defensive end
Joshua Johnson took on his former squad in CU's opener at Georgia Southern. Johnson played two seasons at Georgia Southern, redshirting as a freshman before playing in eight games in 2018, transferring to Highland Community College for the 2019 campaign. Johnson posted two tackles, assisting on a stop for loss against his former team.
Jai Williams, a redshirt sophomore wide receiver, played in 10 games, making two starts for Coastal Carolina last season. Williams notched nine receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns in 2019 for the Chanticleers, and posted a catch for 17 yards against CCU on Friday.
After making 12 tackles with an interception and four pass breakups in his first season in the Orange & Black in 2019, cornerback
Malik Grate will head back to his initial college choice in Wake Forest. Grate last played for the Demon Deacons in 2018, posting two tackles and a touchdown, recovering a blocked punt in the end zone against Boston College.
Although he did not appear in a game for Wake Forest, with injuries costing him both of his seasons in Winston-Salem, offensive tackle
Mike Edwards will also take on his former team on October 9.
Scouting Wake Forest
The Demon Deacons head into their lone nonconference game of the 2020 season at 0-2 following a 45-42 loss at NC State on September 19. Wake opened the year against No. 1 Clemson, falling 37-13.
Sam Hartman has thrown for 418 yards and a touchdown, including 167 yards to Jaquarii Roberson, adding a TD catch. Kenneth Walker III, who posted 131 yards and three touchdowns against the Wolfpack, has totaled 150 yards on the year for the Deacons. Ja'Cquez Williams leads the way on the defensive side of the ball with 19 tackles, including 1.5 stops for loss.
Campbell vs. the FBS
Prior to the 2020 season, Campbell had played against just four FBS opponents, traveling to Troy in 2019 and hosting Coastal Carolina in 2018, while facing off with Old Dominion in 2013 and Appalachian State in 2014.
Although CU has never beaten an FBS opponent (0-7), the Camels nearly took down Georgia Southern in their 2020 opener in Statesboro, Ga., falling just a point short, 27-26.
Georgia Southern was Campbell's fifth game overall against an FBS squad, and third with full FBS status. When Campbell previously played at ODU and at App State, both were in the final year of the transitional phase from the FCS level. ODU played a FBS independent schedule in 2013, squaring off against five FBS members, while the Mountaineers played a full Sun Belt slate in 2014, going 6-2 in league play while winning its final six games of the year.
The Camels also played Charlotte in 2013 and 2014 when the 49ers were in the beginning stages of their transition to FBS, playing an independent FCS schedule.
Friday's game will be Campbell's first ever against a Power Five opponent in football.
The road back to football
Of seven Big South affiliated squads, only Campbell and North Alabama are scheduled to play games this fall, two of now
17 FCS programs in the country fielding a 2020 schedule.
Campbell is also playing four FBS opponents, tied for the most in the country by an FCS program, as of this week, when several programs added dates. Stephen F. Austin, which is playing a nine game schedule, is also taking on four FBS opponents. CU is one of eight programs playing at least three FBS foes, including Central Arkansas, which is scheduled to play 10 times this season, the most in FCS.
On August 12, the
Big South Conference voted to allow up to four nonconference games in the fall at institutional discretion, after delaying its fall sports seasons and championships with the intent of playing in the spring, including league championships.
And then there was one
Georgia Southern is the only opponent on the Camels' fall schedule that was originally on the 2020 calendar. The Camels were originally set to open the season on September 5, hosting in-state and former conference foe Davidson, one of six home dates scheduled at Barker-Lane Stadium, before heading to Statesboro.
CU was set to play five Big South opponents, including nationally-ranked Monmouth and Kennesaw State, which both advanced in last season's FCS playoffs. The Camels were also slated to host Mercer, Presbyterian and North Alabama in nonconference action, while heading on the on the road to Elon.
