FARMVILLE, VA –
Jordan Whitfield scored all 20 of his points in the second half and Campbell defeated Longwood 64-58 Saturday night at Willett Hall.
Cedric Henderson, Jr. added 19 points (14 in the final period) for the short-handed Camels (6-6, 2-3 Big South), who played without their fourth-leading scorer,
Austin McCullough, who sat out due to injury. Jesús Carralero scored nine points in the first half, but missed the final 22:12 after suffering an injury late in the first half.
Campbell shot 59 percent from the floor in the second half, while limiting the host Lancers to just 39 percent shooting overall.
Justin Hill and Juan Munoz led Longwood (2-11, 1-6) with 11 points, while Leslie Nkereuwem and Zac Watson chipped in 10 each for the Lancers, who dropped their third-straight game, all by six, or fewer points.
Watson's bucket gave the Lancers their largest lead (35-28) with 17:06 to play before
Joshua Lusane's slam capped a 12-4 burst to put CU in front 40-39 with 12:23 remaining. The teams traded the lead until Jesper Granlund's trey with 9:09 remaining pulled Longwood even at 44.
Whitfield then personally outscored Longwood 10-2 over 4:23 span to give the Camels a 54-46 edge with 4:15 remaining.
The Lancers clawed back within two (60-58) on Nkereuwem's dunk with 32 seconds remaining, but Campbell broke Longwood's press and Whitfield scored in transition on the other end to push the lead to four with 26 seconds remaining. Hill missed a jumper before Henderson rebounded and made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 14.9 seconds left to round out the scoring.
Campbell finished 27-of-49 (.551) from the field, 3-of-14 from 3-point distance and 7-of-11 from the line. Inside the arc, Campbell made 68.5 percent (24-35) of its attempts.
"It was a gritty win," said Campbell head coach
Kevin McGeehan. "Our work on the backboard was pretty good and we took care of the ball well in the second half. You don't expect us to win a lot of games when we hit only three 3-point shots, but we were very efficient from two."
Whitfield hit 9-of-12 shots overall – 9-of-11 in the second period. Henderson made 7-of-14 from the floor, while
Messiah Thompson dealt four assists for Campbell, which won its second in the last three outings.
Campbell made its first six shots and led 13-3 on
Milos Stajcic's layup with 14:38 to play in the opening period.
However, the Lancers closed the period on a 12-0 run and led 29-24 at the break. Campbell shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening half, but made just 1-of-7 beyond the arc and committed nine turnovers.
The Camels and Lancers conclude the two-game set Sunday with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
