BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Kaleigh Backlund scored twice,
Emma Bushee had a goal and two assists and Campbell defeated Gardner-Webb 7-1 Wednesday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Hayley Krahenbil,
Jessica Donald,
Jackie Richards and
Reagan Baiotto also scored for the Camels (8-3-2, 6-1-0 Big South), who won their second-straight match and are unbeaten in eight of their last nine outings.
Jaasiel Forde scored the lone goal for Gardner-Webb (6-10, 3-4), which has not won this year when allowing a goal.
Campbell scored on seven of its nine shots on target overall and jumped to a 4-1 lead at the break. CU finished with a 17-4 edge in shots and allowed only two GWU attempts on goal.
"I'm really proud of the girls; generating an attack like that says something," said Campbell head coach
Samar Azem. "Since our loss to Longwood, we've woken up in a few big ways. I'm proud of the way we're moving the ball and defending. I think we're playing very well, but I don't think we're playing our best soccer yet."
Krahenbil put the Camels in front just 2:59 into the match on a blistering header from Bushee's corner kick. Backlund doubled the margin just 2:45 later when she slotted home Donald's low cross.
Forde cut the lead in half on her header off Marina Bradic's corner, but Campbell scored twice more before the break.
Donald ended a scramble in the box for her fourth goal of the season in the 36th minute, then Bushee finished a sequence of passes from
Taryn Phillips and
Mary Tierney with just 1:05 remaining in the opening half for her team-leading fifth goal of the year.
Richards nodded in
Amber Liston's cross in the 55th minute for her fourth goal of the year, before Backlund was in the right place in the box to take advantage of a failed clearance in the 71st for her fourth this season – and second two-goal outing.
GWU keeper Kately Kellogg failed to hold a cross in the 78th minute that Baiotto pounced on for her fourth score of the year.
Stephanie Martelli had one save in 84 minutes in the Camel nets, while
Reaghan Duval did not face a shot on target over the final six minutes.
A senior defensive midfielder, Bushee now has a career-high 18 points (5 goals, 8 assists) through 13 matches.
Campbell matched its season scoring high of seven goals set Sept. 30 vs. Hampton.
The Camels return to action Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Winthrop.
