BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Campbell (12-8, 7-1) topped Gardner-Webb (7-11, 4-4) in straight sets Saturday afternoon to remain in second place at the halfway point of the conference slate. The Camels got stronger throughout the match, taking each set by a larger margin than the previous.
Campbell picked up a narrow 26-24 lead to go up 1-0 after the first set. It was all Camels early as they jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Still with a healthy lead at 22-15, the Bulldogs put together a major run, scoring seven in a row to even the score. The seniors stepped up late for Campbell to close the set.
Madee Miner picked up a kill and
Kate Menz ended the set with an ace.
The Camels jumped out to another early lead in the second set and never let the Bulldogs tie or lead after it was 6-6 early on. Menz again picked up the set winner with a kill to close out the 25-20 second set.
Campbell put the match away with a convincing 25-14 win in third. Campbell used a 6-0 run in the middle of the set to push the lead to nine and effectively close things out. The lead grew to 11 thanks to an ace and kill from
Chloe Cook to end the third set and the match.
The Camels featured a very balanced attack. Cook and
Sarah Colla paced the attack with eight kills each, while three other Camels chipped in five or more.
Claranne Fechter collected 15 digs and
Madee Miner tallied a team-high 21 kills.
Campbell hit .250 on the day, committing just 12 errors, the second fewest of the season. The defense held GWU to hitting .062 with the Bulldogs committing 27 errors. GWU is the eighth opponent Campbell has held to below .100 this season.
Gardner-Webb's Makena Phillips led all players with 11 kills and Tori Weatherly dished out 27 assists.
Another midweek match now awaits the Camels, who head to Hampton on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
