Campbell downs Hampton in four sets

HAMPTON, VA. – Campbell improved to 12-0 all-time against Hampton with a four-set win Tuesday night inside of Holland Hall. The win moves the Camels to 13-8, 8-1 on the season and makes them winners of 11 of their last 12 matches. Hampton falls to 1-15, 0-9 in league play.

Chloe Cook paced the Camels with her first career double-double, piling up 17 kills and 11 digs, each one shy of her career highs.

Campbell jumped out to early leads throughout the match, going up 3-0, 4-0, 6-0 and 4-0 during each set on the evening.

The Camels took the first set 25-19, but it was closer than the score indicates. Campbell led 15-10 at the media timeout and held the serve coming out of it, but Hampton rattled off five quick points to even the score at 15 all. Sarah Colla picked up a kill to go back up and ensured the Lady Pirates would never lead during the set. Still close at 21-19, a late 4-0 run put the set away for Campbell.

The second set was close the whole way and ultimately saw Hampton come away with a 25-23 win. After leading 4-0 early, neither team had a lead larger than two the rest of the way. Campbell hit just .082 during the second set, and three errors contributed to Hampton's final four points to close out the set. The Camels tallied a total of 10 errors in the second set.

Campbell seemed to find its rhythm in the third set with a 25-18 win. The Camels led by as many as 10 and hit .244 during the set, the highest in any set on the night. Campbell led 6-0 early and saw the largest lead happen at 18-8. The Lady Pirates cut the 10 point lead down to just five, but couldn't get any closer to really threaten the Camel lead.

The Camels made sure the match didn't' reach a fifth set and closed it out with a solid 25-14 win in the fourth. Campbell again extended their lead to double digits at 17-7 during the fourth and did not let Hampton back into it this time. Colla picked up back-to-back kills to end the match.

Claranne Fechter finished with 27 digs, the most in a four-set match of her career. Cook tallied a match-high 17 kills and Colla joined her in double figures with 12 kills on the night.

Hampton was led by Gabby Calloway at 10 kills, the lone Lady Pirate in double figures. Callaway also added 17 digs to tie for the team-lead with Jessica Pugh.

Campbell returns home for a homecoming day match against Radford on Saturday at 1 p.m. That is the first of three in a row at home, with NC A&T and High Point visiting Buies Creek the following weekend.
