BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Laney Peabody and
Reagan Baiotto scored and Campbell extended its win streak to four matches Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over Charleston Southern at the Eakes Complex.
The Camels (10-3-2, 8-1-0) clinched at least a share of the Big South Conference regular season title and can secure the championship outright with at least a draw Saturday in a 5:00 p.m. kickoff at USC Upstate.
"Charleston Southern does a such a great job of getting a lot of players behind the ball and they don't give up a lot of goals," said Campbell head coach
Samar Azem. "We knew we had our work cut out for us. We knew we'd have to get gritty, be composed and open up some gaps for ourselves. It was a hard-earned three points."
Peabody's left-footed shot from outside the area put the Camels ahead just 5:10 into the contest. Two minutes later, Jenea Knight broke in behind the CU back four, but keeper
Reaghan Duval cut down her angle and the Buc forward shot wide of the left post.
Charleston Southern (6-6-1, 5-4-0) equalized early in the second half when Lauren McDonald headed home Erin Rush's corner kick.
Peabody nearly had her second goal of the night when her powerful header was on target, but right at Buc keeper Jenna Moran after 62 minutes.
Baiotto provided her third game-winner of the season in the 69th.
Cazzi Norgren hit a long left-footed free kick on goal that Moran saved, but was unable to secure. Baiotto netted the rebound for her fifth goal of the season.
The Camels almost added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when
Jackie Richards sent a low cross to the front post, but
Cameron Turner's volley missed just wide left.
Campbell limited the Bucs to just two shots on target, six overall on the night. The Camels had 18 shots, five on goal, and have now scored multiple times in eight of their last nine outings.
