Kaleigh Backlund score to lift Campbell to a 2-0 victory Saturday over USC Upstate at County University Soccer Stadium.
The Camels (11-3-2, 9-1-0) won their fifth-straight game and claimed the Big South Conference regular season title. CU will host a Big South Championship semifinal match Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
Jessica Donald put the Camels in front in the 19th minute with her team-leading seventh goal of the season off assists from
Kaleigh Backlund and
Emma Bushee.
The Camels outshot the Spartans 10-0 in the first half and took five corner kicks to just one for the hosts.
Upstate (4-9-1, 3-6), which did not attempt a shot until after 62 minutes elapsed, dropped its third-straight shutout decision.
Donald returned the favor and set up Backlund in the 67th minute for the freshman's fifth goal of the season.
Stephanie Martelli made one save in the Camel nets to record her first solo shutout of the season. Campbell finished with a 22-2 edge in shots, 16-1 in attempts on target, and took eight corner kicks while Upstate had two.
The Camels, who won the 2020-21 Big South tournament crown, claimed their first league regular season title since winning the 2004 Atlantic Sun trophy. CU finished off its conference schedule by outscoring its last five opponents 20-4.
