FARMVILLE, VA. – Danielle Toone scored the game's only goal in the 51st minute and Longwood ended Campbell's six-match unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory Wednesday at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Toone ran on to a diagonal pass from Kiersten Yuhas and slotted home the ball to provide the goal that ultimately kept the Lancers (5-5-4, 4-0-2) unbeaten in Big South play.
Campbell (6-3-2, 4-1-0) lost for the first time against Big South competition and fell for the first time since a 1-0 setback Sept. 2 at East Carolina.
The Camels had several chances in the final 10 minutes to equalize, but Elyssa Nowowieski shot directly into the hands of LWU keeper Jordan Horacek in the 81st minute.
With just over two minutes remaining, Jackie Richards cut her dribble back to the middle, but her shot from about 25 yards stayed high and wide.
Longwood finished with a slim 13-12 edge in shots, 8-6 in attempts on target. The Camels finished with five corner kicks to four by the hosts. Horacek made six saves in the Lancer nets, while Campbell keeper Reaghan Duval finished with seven.
Campbell outshot the Lancers 7-4 in a scoreless opening half. Nowowieski's header forced Longwood Horacek to leave her feet to make the save in the 28th minute.
Longwood's best opportunity of the opening period came in the 34th minute when Julia Gill's dipping left-footed shot from outside the box stayed high of the crossbar.
In the 43rd minute, Emma Bushee ran on to Amber Liston's service, but Bushee's volley sailed just wide of the left post.
Campbell returns home Saturday to take on UNC Asheville at 7:00 p.m.
