Campbell falls in five sets at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Campbell's seven-match winning streak was snapped in a five-set defeat at High Point Friday night in a battle for the top spot in the Big South. The loss drops Campbell to 9-8, 4-1 in the league while High Point moves to 13-5, 5-0 in the league and now sits alone atop the standings.

Sarah Colla joined the 1000 kill club with her seventh kill of the night. The senior from Carlsbad, Calif. is the 12th Camel to reach 1000 career kills and is now the second active player in the Big South to reach that mark.

HPU jumped out to an early lead by taking the first set 25-18. Melody Paige hit .400 in the set at 3-1-5, but eight Campbell errors (seven attacking, one ball handling) were costly in the set as the Camels hit just .113 in the opening frame.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in the second set and Campbell couldn't recover. The Camels never let the set fully slip away and trailed by just four at 24-20, but did not have a late rally in them to ever draw even. High Point hit a strong .405 in the second set and also added three aces.

The Camels refused to go quietly and battled to take the third set 26-24. Campbell trailed for most of the set but managed to draw even at 22-22. From there the teams traded points until a kill from Colla and a Panther attack error helped Campbell win the set. It was the 18th point of the set, a ball that Colla tipped past the back row, that gave Colla her 1000th kill of her career.

Campbell was in a good position in the fourth set after a block by Cook and Patterson put the Camels up by two at the media timeout. But High Point answered in a big way, coming out of the timeout with a 5-0 run to take the lead. But Campbell again proved why these teams entered tied at the top of the standings and worked to force a fifth set with a 27-25 set win.

The fifth set was close for the first half of it and was tied 8-8. From there, the Panthers put together a 4-0 that proved to be the different in the match and went on to win 15-10 in the fifth set.

Chloe Cook posted a team-high 17 kills while Colla added 14 and Lailah Green had 13. Green also had a double-double with 13 digs. The setting duo of Madee Miner and Emily Mitter posted similar stat lines each with 25 assists and a double-double. Claranne Fechter led the defense with 28 digs.

High Point's Dylan Maberry logged a match-high 23 kills. The Panthers hit .212 as a team compared to Campbell's .167.

Campbell will make the short trip from High Point to Greensboro tomorrow for a 6 p.m. match against NC A&T. That match will be available on ESPN+.
